Koni FSD w stock springs X5 35D

I have been debating between Bilstein HD and Koni FSD for my 2010 X5 35D. I currently have 120K miles on the clock, base suspension shocks are still alive but dont do the job right going over the rough pavement. So I placed an order today for Koni FSD and new oem bump stops. Should arrive next week. I will post my review upon installation. Anyone with same set up please post your experience.

I was considering these as I had them on my e93 335 and they were ok.
For the money I should have just went with coilovers.
They were good on the lowering springs but once I removed the springs for winter I found them way too bouncy.
With the lack of choices on the x5 I was contemplating getting them again but ended up going with KW V3. I'm actually removing them this week and am nervous about having body roll again on stock components

Koni FSD struts for the E70 are not for lowering springs, just stock. I personally have the Koni FSD Kit w/ Eibach Spring on my E46 and it's fantastic! Ride is comfortable yet sporty. The setup really shines when you carve through the canyons and I still have stock sways. Obviously the E70 is a completely different platform but thought id share my experience.

I've had the Koni FSDs on my X5 for several months now. It took over 10 weeks to get them in after ordering them.

I'm running on the staggered 275/315 20" setup on DWS06es. The ride is a lot less busy, and smoother. I wouldn't say "Lexus-like" but definitely more comfortable on the freeways. At lower speeds, it's still a little busy, but nothing like the stock setup. These things are usually pretty subjective, but overall I'm glad I went ahead and did this. They're not made for lowering springs.

There is a Bilstein/Eibach setup that's above the Bilstein HDs that's sportier, and made for lowering...but I've got a 135i with an Ohlins setup already...I wanted the E70 to be a comfortable, but sporty cruiser.

Spacer and or Washers

I have just install a set of Konis with OEM rubber and mounts. Im getting a cluncking noise, dealer says it is coming from the top shaft nut, the tech notes the following

tfound r/f strut loose in mount
and tightened. found both front
struts do not tighten up solid like
oem ones. noise sounds like it is
from both front mounts. please
also ask customer if any
spacers or washer were left off
during aftermarket strut
installation

Did you have any issue with the shaft spinning not tightening all the way? The guy tld me he's out of threads and its still loose? WTF

who did the work?

did they leave out parts?

when they put it together did they very carefully make sure the final result would duplicate the OE fitment???

Right... All valid questions...
-I did the work. First time on a BMW, not the first time doing suspension o several cars over the years.
-I have asked Koni if the kit included some sort of spacer or washer that i did not receive. The diagram that came with the shocks did not elude to any extra parts being required.
-When i put the suspension back together i followed the BMW TIS.

One thing to note* I re used the stock springs on the front. 1 spring was that of a Monroe Quick strut installed by a previous owner. I re used that spring, and it is THAT side that is making the noise. Could this non OE spring be the problem?

Now, making the assumption all parts are brand new, why would i run out of threads on the shock top nut and still have a loose shock?

Sorry, im not going to be a help. When Ive done this before, you are always fitting, testing, checking. Now you are past that point so you kind of only rely on the aftermarket vendor...and the fact that someone was hacking yours up previously is troubing.

Youve looked at the OE parts list, yes:

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=31_0791

(just guessed about year and model for you)

Also, you dont want mis-matched springs or dampers, left and right. Always replace in pairs....

On mine, one of the guide supports (8&10 in the diagram ARD posted) had disintegrated into small pieces. This makes a noise as if the car is falling apart, nasty clunks.

The notion of "out of thread" is BS, the nut and washers are designed to bottom out and hold the rubber disks at a certain pretension. Then the packaged sits suspended on the top spring perch.

You are looking at taking the struts off, then disassembling the perches/springs from the dampers and checking all the washers and rubber components are there.

As far as unmatched springs....I'm with ARD, that would make me nervous. L & R suspension parts should be replaced in pairs.
