Question Failed glow plug(s). Bad for the engine?

It's breakdown season for my lemon 35d! This year I have at least 1 glow plug failure. -10 to 20 degrees is common South Dakota weather. Engine starts super rough, then smooths out within 5 minutes. I suspect it's a $1500 dealership fix. Can I just ignore it?

Edit: $1122 estimate parts+labor

Edit: I have no desire to DIY.

Not bad for engine! I have all 6 failure! I do not care! My car is in garage! -15 engine starts ok! You can use 0w-30 oil...for lighter start! Anyway...they lasts about 2 years..and then again failure
Where you can find such astronomic price 1500$ to fix it

Go to an independent. They'll likely do all 6, plus the control module for ~$1500. If you can DIY, all in is ~$650-750.

Unfortunately no good indies where I live; lost my trust. One good thing I can say about our dealership is they fix stuff right the first time.

FCP-Euro offers a kit including the GPM control module for $327. You need a bit of elbow grease and some anti-seize off Amazon. All-in DIY for $350 I'd think.

Just ignore it. Eventually you can buy a new car.

Best plan to save money.

I recognize the sarcasm, but after $13k in repairs in 5 years, it's getting harder and harder to accept fixing stuff if the vehicle can still take me from Point A to Point B. I can live with rough starts in winter if that's all it is.

^$216/mo ownership costs isn't terrible when you compare it to buying a new vehicle. The wife and I are looking for a 3-row vehicle now with a warranty due to kids and aging parents, going to cost us ~$600/mo for a Telluride or Pallisade. I could only imagine the payment on a new X5, or worse, X7.

At least I'll never have to work on it. Gotta find that silver lining.

That's even better than I thought. Will have to check my records but I'm sure we paid more than that for the wife's truck's parts.

What year is your X5? Another option is to do a delete on the emissions equipment.

Sure you can ignore, but there's zero chance all of this partially burnt fuel is good for the troublesome catalyst and emission systems on diesels.
