LOL. **I** was confusing the issue. I looked up a diesel X5 active tank and found the pump above the active tank- but that was an F15 part. My bad.Ive not had to replace either, picked apart the active tank after a deer murder. The active tank is behind the front bumper in front of the RF wheel.... and I dont recall seeing a pump under that. Caveat... The more I look at this, the less certain I am. lol |

Found a local independent shop with the SA that used to work for BMW here - they replaced the pump with an aftermarket version (Bosch labeled so probably the same as the factory) and the CEL stayed off for about 24 hours. I'll call them tomorrow but just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts about something else that could be wrong - metering valve? Defective replacement part? Don't know what the code is yet. Thanks for any help.

If you're going to own it for any amount of time (or any BMW really) invest in a foxwell 520 or the like. Will save you tons of time and money.
Let us know what the code is when you get it read. Did the Indy diagnose the previous code as needing a pump or just swap the pump at your request?

How much was the aftermarket (proper term is OEM, bosch is the OEM for the OE BMW part) Your post is confusing. The report you just wrote is for work done very recently? So in response to the dealer saying its a bad pump, you had the pump replaced- all good- but you are gonna call the shop about something else being wrong? A new code? but you never told us you actually HAVE a code or light now.... As you are discovering, it is super expensive to visit shops to pull codes. You are stuck agreeing to work, and no idea what is wrong- then you get a call, with a voice in your ear and you need to make a decision. Even if you never do any work, a reader is a very cheap investment |

Without knowing what the DTCs were causing the CEL and what test plan or diagnostic steps the dealership took before you had the pump replaced and what's causing it now, there is no way to offer a guess. The pump could have unmasked other issues, there could have been multiple issues all along, a pump replacement may not have been the best choice given the specific DTC or multiple DTCs. There are thousands of possibilities. The two you mentioned could cause a CEL.

Turns out to be a completely different problem - error code 4873 and the indy did a careful diagnosis and determined that the spring in the EGR cooling system was broken. And I did order a foxwell 520 - this is actually my fifth bmw over 35 years but the first one that I have kept this long - I really wish they would do a diesel x5 for the us but it doesn't look like it.
