2013 E70 Tire Pressure Monitor
E70 35xi LCI... TPM won't reset. Any tricks/hacks. Severe weather change. It did this before when the weather 1st broke. Now, it just stays on. Tires are fine pressure is fine. P! I! T! A**!!! TIA! Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk |

How old are the sensors? The batteries die eventually or the sensor just quits working.

I think Josiahg52 is right; even one dead TPS sensor will trigger the malfunction message. Sensors are part of each inflator valve. There is a nut that holds the valve stem to the wheel; unscrew the nut, then pull it into the wheel. Obviously, the tire bead needs to be broken down from the rim. Your can replace them one at a time, and see when the system comes back; or just replace all 4. Get them online, much cheaper than thru BMW. Just make sure you get the correct ones for your year; I think they changed sensors around the 2012-2013 time frame.

My understanding was that the tire pressure sensor actually measures the rotational speed of each tire and detects a flat using that, rather than a sensor in each tyre.

My 2012 E70 X5 user manual says it measures wheel rotation speed to work out of the tyres are flat. The OP says it's a 2013 E70 X5 so it may have changed, but I think that's the same model. The link you have is for a BMW 5 series not X5. On mine you have to correctly inflate the tyres and then tell the system that the tyre pressures are correct and drive it so it learns the speeds. It never tells you actual pressure,

Perhaps EU/UK systems operate differently than US systems? The Tire pressure sensors part numbers are exactly the same for both the US E60 (5 series) and the US E70 (X5). I don't think BMW USA would develop 2 different systems for similarly developed chassis'; but I may be mistaken. If not, then should the E70 TPMS operate the same as the E60 5 series?

Well, there's two systems. The first is Flat Tire Monitor (FTM) which uses tire rotational speed obtained from the ABS sensors and compared by the RDW module. The second is an actual Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) that measures tire pressure directly using sensors inside each tire, mounted on the wheel, processed by RDC module. The E39, like mine, and E53 among others have a FTM. Most E70, like mine, have a TPMS but some have a FTM. Any of these sensors or modules can cause a tire pressure warning. Some tire pressure warning issues could exist with other fault indications. Conversely, not all faults with these sensors or modules will result in a tire pressure warning.
Clearly, the first step is determining which system is in use on your X5. If it has a true TPMS, the Autel*MaxiTPMS TS501*can interrogate each sensor and provide the pressure, temperature, battery status and serial number for each sensor (tire) and is what I use. Assuming the sensors are working, additional troubleshooting steps can be taken. If the FTM, proper diagnostic software and terminal will direct the next troubleshooting steps based on the specific faults reported.
