Combox replacement

Hi All,

Apologies for a duplicate post, but I saw that this particular forum was well used.... so am shamelessly hedging my bets and posting here too :-)

I have a 2011 BMW GT 530d and a while ago, lost a lot of functionality between my phone and the car - I can still take/make calls, but many of the other functions have been lost.

I did a bit of research, and believe the combox needs to be replaced, so I purchased a used (working) combox from eBay, but before I attempt to fit it, I have a few questions;

The Combox (Telematics P/N 9257151) was removed from a 2013 BMW 1 series - it's the same P/No, and the seller assured me it is a cross-fit, so should function. I believe that although the unit is coded to a different car, the functionality should be fine, but it won't work with BMW Assist - I'm not worried about that, it's not something I need.... so, it shouldn't need re-coding.

BUT, I have also read that there could be possible issues - USB might not work, the Combox could be 'constantly powered up' (the Network stays awake) which could drain the battery or set the alarm off, and finally, that the replacement Combox might need to be exactly from the same year as my car.

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Do you have the ability to read codes, access modules, check for errors, reset modules and code?

Not saying this is/was your issue but it just seems way cheaper than buying a combox.....

Thanks for the reply,

Unfortunately, I have neither the ability or the tools... only the ability to research the issue :-)

As I mentioned, from what I could gaher, a replacement would do the trick, so I took a gamble and bought a used Combox, it only cost me £30, so no great loss if it doesn't work, but I just want to make sure that I do it correctly, and also don't suffer any issues after fitting. I have read that it is simply 'plug and play'. but of course, there are always different scenarios out there, so I was hoping that someone had already replaced a Combox and could give me the benefit of his/her hindsight. :-)

Update - my GT went to BMW for EGR Valve replacement, and they also updated the software and low and behold, full comms restored!

Odd that last year, BMW told me I would need a new Combox – perhaps there was a new software update that fixed the issue. Now my kids phones can connect to my system and I have SMS messages coming in. I will set up my email shortly....
