DPF/EGR Delete Timing

Hi all, not too knowledgeable mechanically so I hope you can help me out. I know that DPF/EGR issues often come up and are quite expensive to resolve. My question is, do these issues affect other components of the vehicle? Is it possible to do the deletes if (or once) the issues arise in lieu of replacing them? Thanks!

Hope someone can give advice. I’m thinking if it’s advisable to do the deletes now or wait if something happens and delete then. What I’m worried about is whether dpf/egr issues extend to other components that make addressing them at the point of failure more costly. Thanks.

I’d wait. I *am* waiting.

Of course your challenge is that you are in a location where deep knowledge of (1) how to fix BMW diesels and (2) how to delete BMW diesels may be a bit ‘thin’.

I do not think there are downstream issues that may be exacerbated by DPF/EGR issues. HOWEVER, it can be challenging to troubleshoot non-related issues when there is an EGR system failure. Knowing “is it the emissions system or is it something else” can be challenging for untrained mechanics. Combine that with you, as the owner, telling the mechanic “yeah I want to remove” or “yeah this stuff causes problems” there is about a 100% chance they will agree with you.....

I actually had direct experience with this on my first X5. Around 150k-ish miles the DPF clogged and needed to be replaced. The car still ran but was a total dog. You couldn't pass anyone on a two lane road because there was no get up and go at all. This was 4 years ago maybe and there weren't a ton of options for deletes and tunes except for buzzken and JR (I think that's right). Anyway; the cost to replace the DPF at the dealer I think was around $4500 or so but the cost to send it to Whitbread and delete everything, gain HP and TQ was about half of that.

Anyway; I wouldn't wait. Depending on your mileage I would save up your money over a few month period (or however long you need) and just plan to do it proactively before you hit that 150k mark since that seems to be when things go awry. Do the same with injectors too. Start buying them now when you have the spare money and have all 6 ready to go when the first one takes a dump on you around 200k miles or so. Its a long job to do one but once you're doing the first one it only takes about an hour to do all 6.

Every single component of the emissions system on the diesel is really expensive. Any single component failure will put the car into reduced power mode.
Normally when a "delete" is done, the EGR system, DPF and SCR are removed along with the DEF injector. Of course, you'll at the very least, have to get a tune that will code out all of that stuff because once that's gone, the DDE won't like it. You'll also have to get a downpipe that replaces the DPF and either gut the SCR by removing the innards or replace with a strait pipe.
The job of removing all that stuff sucks, even for an experienced mechanic. If you're not mechanically inclined, I wouldn't attempt it.
If you'd like to learn more about it, there are several groups on facebook that are heavily involved in that stuff

I agree with this 100%. I've been involved in the process with my mechanic, for an X5, twice. Even though he had done quite a few X5's between my first one in 2015 and my second in 2020 it still took us about 6 hours to do the swap and that's with a lift and all the proper tools you could ask for.

I did mine myself laying on my garage floor. I've been wrenching for over 40 years. I hated every second of it. There is nothing easy about any part of it.

I will say though, the end result with a good engine and transmission tune is pretty amazing.
