Hey everyone,
I thought I would give everyone an update if they're interested. So, I found a 2010 E70 M package with 100k km's. They were asking $15,500 CAD I took my mechanic friend and he noted the following: Crack Front Thrust Rod Bushing Oil filter Housing leaking Oil Pan Gasket leaking He said the Oil Pan is the biggest job, he said probably 10 hours of work. the rod bushing and oil filter isn't a big deal he said, but the oil pan is more work. At the end of the day I know most BMW X5's are going to have these issues as they're super common, so I talked to my wife and we decided to get her a new car. We ended up getting a Kia Seltos. One it's new, don't have to worry about anything for five years (their warranty), it doesn't need premium fuel (which I calculated would save us $1500 a year based on how much we drive), and it's her car, I won't be driving it and she liked the drive. Payments are $460 a month and I can write some of that off through my business. Just wanted to say thank you again for all the input, but it looks like we have a KIA now... I'll be driving my old E53, which I do like, but she has a brand new KIA. |

We've had a couple of Kias after they hired the Audi designer (Peter Schreyer I think?). They've come a long way and we had no issues for the 5 years we owned them. Sounds like you made the logical choice.
We are actually in the next few years thinking of a Telluride (Kia) vs. a Palasade (Hyundai) because we are starting to need a good sized third row and nothing from the Germans or Americans makes sense financially. Too bad because both options are boring to drive.

All about personal preferences/circumstances I guess. But, I did not see that coming....a Kia! Competent but free of any character.
When we were in the phase where a third row became a need for the kids' friends and regular visitors wanting to tour the capital, we opted for the 3-row E70 and it served us well in that regard. If I had known then what I know now, I probably would have bought a Sequioa. Still, no regrets. The E70 has never left us stranded (which was key when I was traveling a lot).

Great job guys. He bought a KIA.
I’d say good choice not going with the M. Though, I would have at least went with a RAV4. I do some mild wrenching and share the similar thoughts with forced induction. I’m not super familiar with them and I know it can get costly. I currently have an old 07 3.0si gas engine with 20s and get 18mpg avg. Next car will probably be a turbo though since I don’t want a v8 BMW. The good thing is, you’ll never have to visit the forums much with your Seltos.

I was looking at the RAV 4 and to get the trim I wanted, it would be over $40k and that was over our budget by quite a bit. There's no question, you can't beat the value you get with Kia/Hyundai. We're planning on keeping it long term, so let's hope it is reliable. At least you get 5 year bumper to bumper, so it should be headache free for five years, let's see how far it goes beyond that. |
