2011 X5 50i Oil change disaster

Morning guys,

So, before I even start my story... I have been the owner of this vehicle for 8 years and did pretty much every oil change myself with no fcukups. Not sure what happened but being human is my only excuse.

Finished the oil change, double checked that the filter is back on but I guess I didn't. Started engine, oil filter and housing shot out and 9 QTS of oil on my garage floor. I guess the housing went in sideways somehow and it did tighten down but the pressure was too much to handle. In any event, cleanup done(2 hours)... new trip to Autozone, $60 bucks later I was ready to start the vehicle up again. I used the usual 8.5 Qts however as I recalled in the past that brought the green marker to Max. So, I added more oil to see if the green marker would reach it's normal location which it didn't even after I took it around the hood.

So, what do I do? Let some of the oil out? Maybe the above described incident emptied extra oil out of the engine and that's why 10 Qts did not fill the marker to max?

Appreciate your attention accorded to this question,

Lev

PS. Pic below is from a youtube video showing how my car's oil level usually is. Not now, below the max unlike the photo after 10.5 Qts
