OBD Unlock

Hey All,

Just picked up a 2011 35D a month ago and am curious about one thing. I have unlocked the OBD to read the coolant temp multiple times. However, it seems like you have to unlock it EVERY TIME. A far cry from what i'm used to in all my other older-ish BMW's.

Is there a workaround to this?

Thanks!

I'm not aware of any. Quite annoying even on my e53 where I don't need to put in the code.

On the E53 you unlock the OBD once, entering the last 5 of the vin, on the e70 you have to do it every time. So it's a multi-step process.

I never had that issue with my E39 / E46 / E53. You unlock via test 19 ONCE, and then you can check any function right away like the coolant temp.

The only exception was when you would disconnect the battery.

Once unlocked...stays unlocked until power is lost...that is gone now if you have a new generation BMW after the e38/e39/e46/e53 era. Gotta unlock every time.

UUGHHHHHHHHH. Annoying. I was hoping I could use ISTA or something to keep it unlocked.

The only saving grace is if the last 5 digits of your VIN’s sum is a small number. My X5 isn’t too bad...it adds up to 16 (0+3+2+8+3)...but my f06 is exasperating since it adds up to 36 (9+8+6+7+6).
