Reversing throw a lot of smoke out exhaust
So recently I started seeing when I put the car in reverse a lot of smoke come out the exhaust, also sometimes the speed is slow then picks up, like a Jerk Motion. Any Idea what this could be? I have a 2009 X5 BMW 4.8 with 99000 Miles. I also have to add 1 Quart of Motor Oil about monthly or bi-monthly. Thanks

Valve stem seals are toast.
I was able to stop mine from smoking by using ATP AT-205 Re-Seal

Do I need to take it to the shop? Is it costly? Thanks for your advice.

Valve stem seal replacement is major, expensive surgery.

Where do you pour that and how long has it been since you used it? Still no smoking issues?

You add it to engine oil. I added it 6k miles ago. Sat idling for 10 minutes the other day when it was hot out and no smoke. Before using ATP I would have smoke coming out my exhaust by then pretty bad (waiting for gas pump, drive thrus, etc.)

Light smoke at idle, some power loss: PCV diapraghm
Hi,
I noticed some light smoking at idle on my 4.8i and found my issue was the PCV diaphragm. Not sure if your heavy smoke issue is related, but worth checking. I have the single valve, located just under the passenger side air intake. First time I removed the air intake to check and found the rubber was torn on over half the diaphragm. Found a repair kit (new diaphragm, spring, cap) locally at oreilly for $25 and was able to work around the intake without removing it. Peel back the foam rubber insulation to access the plastic valve housing and use small knife blade or flat screwdriver to tease the clips open. There are 6, but after teasing 3-4 off the cap should come off. I no longer have the light smoking at idle, and the car runs much more smoothly, I had some jerking at stoplights as it would shift down to compensate for the lost low end power. |

Hello,
I had the same issue with my 2008 X5 V8. The issue is your valve stem seals are gone and burning oil. It will get worse over the time. I have replaced mine for $3500 and issue is resolved. Don't waste your money for the oil additives or some other BS. Try to find a reputable BMW mechanic. Most of them tells you they need to drop the engine and transmission but it is possible without taking engine and tranny with a special tool. Thanks |
