Engine noise normal or timing chain problem ?
Have the N57 on a alpine white 40d E70. Not sure if this is timing chain noise or just normal engine. Car done 80k miles only with frequent oil changes but a few missed regens so oil changes done…

Just sounds like normal valve train noise to me. Not aware of that engine having a problem with timing chain tensioner but I do recommend changing tensioners at 100,000 miles and every 40-50,000 after that.
Having changed the guides on a couple M62tu, it's a lot of work that can likely be avoided for the life of a car just be changing the tensioner. (with only OEM).

Engine noise normal or timing chain problem ?
Quote:
Thanks. I am aware of timing chain issues on diesel n47/n57 engines hence the worry. I don’t think it sounds like timing chain but I’m not very familiar with timing chain noises anyway. I will take your advice about tensioner as that is an easy fix to prolong the life of the chain. I’m more inclined to do more frequent oil changes as my driving tends to be short journeys only which diesel isn’t aimed for. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |

Timing chain rattle will make a very distinct sound that lasts maybe ten seconds on a cold start.
The start noise is not a big problem it's just the clue there is one. When the tension is loose the chain will come off the guides and slap back on likely when you hit a bump or off throttle. I've seen mention of 400,000 miles on original guides so it's not inevitable. I'm confident that most chain guide failure is from keeping a worn out tensioner too long. I will be changing them on wife's 50i before 100,000 miles for sure.
