4.8i alternator mounting

After the hell of replacing the oil seal, I haven't been able to get the bottom bolt on the alternator bracket to align. I've been at this for a few days now. The bolt looks to be hitting too high on the back busing. Is there a chance not tightening one of the E10 bolts enough would lead to the alternator not lining up? Would pulling the steering pump make the alignment easier?

Thanx.

Three is one bolt that is to adjust the angle of the PS pump on the m62 I've worked on. If similar it sounds like the bolt giving you fits and r&r PS pump would be the cure.

The back top fastener needs an extremely low profile ratchet 13mm to address. I used my through hole ratchet it worked perfectly.

I'll try that... I think I need to get under the alternator and push it up from the back somehow. I can't believe it's this hard to line up a bolt hole...

I have a 04 4.4i, one of the earliest batch of N62's, delivered in October 2003. Replacing the alternator was a real pain.

First, we tried changing just the voltage regulator on the original. Getting it back it was a severe pain and didn't solve the problem.

The full replacement I got had an updated design with the back bolt sliding on the lower left. The extra few mm this provided made it easier, though it still took a quite a while to align.

You can read about my experience here:

loosening the power steering pump allowed me to thread the lower bolt but its position blocks me from rotating the alternator enough to get to the top bolt... I would hate to have to pull the pump... no idea how to get around it though.

I replaced my alternator few years ago and one of the step before mounting the new one was to prep the bolt on the new alternator on a work bench.
I vaguely remember I had to hit the bolt with a small hammer to get it into position.
I recently found one guy did exactly that in one of the YouTube video. I will post it here if I can find it

I think that's for the air cooled alt like mine. The press fit threaded insert is super tight and you can add a mm or two by pounding it out the back before installing. It makes it 10x easier.

This is a different problem not sure if that trick applies or not but if it does definitely take advantage!

That's exactly how to do it. My bolt is a standard bolt So I can hit it directly.
