Low dust / good braking: what's your goto brand?
I have looked on FCP Euro and it's impossible to go by their reviews as there are only a few and they are almost always contradictory. "These are so bad at dust, I put my friends used pads on until I can get a different brand" "These are a great low-dust solution!" As an example. so I'm asking for the pros' help. They've got Textar, Jurid, ATE, Akebono, Ferodo, Bosch... the options are mind boggling and 6 of these brands have the "OEM" label. What do you guys suggest for an E70? Thanks for your time! |

If all you are after is low dust, go with a ceramic set.
I am using non-ceramic Hawk hi-performance pads, a bit of dust, less than OEM/OE, but with better all-around performance. Sent from my Moto Z (2) using Tapatalk |

I use Bosch pads pretty much on all my vehicles. They brake quite well, after all they are made to be used on the autobahn! But......it is a dust storm each time I hit the brakes :-) I don't really care because for the other three drivers in the house I want them to have optimum braking. I sometimes wind up washing only the wheels before I wash the entire car. ATE are quite good as they have the same provenance but also a lot of dust.
AFAI remember Akebono is the go-to for low dust and decent brake performance.... .

I've replaced the rears with Akebono pads and Centric rotors. Huge difference from what was installed. The dust is pretty low compared to the front. I'll use the same combo when its time to replace the fronts and report back here.

Akebono Euro's FTW. Virtually no dust, last forever, super gentle on rotors, good (not the best, but good) stopping power. What's not to like?

I'm an outlier when it comes to pads/rotors. I replace all 4 corners at the same time and use a cheap aftermarket brand. Brakemotive. They use ceramic pads and drilled/slotted rotors. Have installed at least 20 full sets across different manufacturers. Never had a full set cost more than $300. They come with new sensors too.
As with all ceramic pads, initial bite/feel suffers a little bit, but nothing crazy. The anchors still drop plenty hard when necessary. Very low dusting. Been using them for 15 years and came to them after reading about them on the Corvette forums. Sometimes they use PowerStop pads, sometimes StopTech, sometimes housebrand pads (all ceramic). Never had a problem or difference in performance with any of them. If I were tracking my X I might go with a set of blanks and organic pads from Textar, Zimmerman, or Pagid but for everyday use have had no issues. But as with anything, do your research and make your decision.

Thank you all for the help! Just a quick addon question: are the sensors considered best to replace every pad change or are they something that can be cleaned and replaced without expectation of an issue further down the road? |

If your brake pad warning light is showing up on the dash, you'll need a new sensor. If not, no sensor needed.

Ceramic low dust pads are garbage, in my opinion. I use only BMW genuine pads and usually the Zimmerman brake rotors, both from FCP euro.
Have tried the Akebono ceramic on several cars and while they are virtually dust free, the performance is total crap. Again, my opinion. I would rather drive around with black dusted wheels and have brakes that inspire confidence in all conditions. |
