Any chance you flipped serpentine belt ? They say it's bad and possibly the way they wear it might push the pulleys to the opposite side when flipped and bring on a squeal

Problem solved!
Thank youuuu everybody, so much! It's amazing how the sound was able to dress itself as something sinister from the top end....it was infact, the A/C pulley AND the little tensioner next to it. Both of them have play and will need replacing.
One of the (few) benefits of being in the UK means that it's not the end of the world to run without A/C, lest at this time of year as well, where it's friggin freezing right now. I'll tackle sourcing a refurbished A/C unit/clutch/pulley and tensioner/belt in the Spring time. For now, I'm just glad I have my lovely X5 back! Gosh, I've missed it...was definitely taking it for granted and moaning that the 4.8 motor is pointless....it sure put a damn big grin on my face today (and of course thanks to insight from you guys). It's as though it never happened, haha: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P-AJamYngQ I replaced the main serpentine belt after discovering that all was well with the motor. Gosh that P/S cage was a pain in the ass! I checked all of the pulleys and the little idler between the alternator and P/S could probably do with being replaced soon also, but not as a matter of urgency. My car was complaining of the coolant temperature being lower than the signal (or something like that) for a while, so over the weekend when I replaced the water pump (not fun) I also took the chance to replace the thermostat. The car most definitely has a little more pep and is more awake/alive in the mid-range in gears 1 and 2 around town. I feel like if this car had even more low end grunt, it would be really special. Thanks once again guys and happy holidays |

The car I recently worked on it was also the AC tensioner. I cut the belt with a knife and all was well.
Annoyingly once I changed the tensioner I had to remove the serpentine belt to get the new ac belt on.
