Avin issues.. better android head unit?

Hey guys, so my Avin 10.25 Android head unit in my 2013 X5 just bit the dust after just under 2 years of owning it.

My screen colors have disappeared, and I can't access the android portion of the head unit.

I'm in Canada and I know our cold winters sometime wreck havoc on screens.

I'm shopping now for another head unit to install in the spring, and I'm just wondering if there are any alternatives for Avin head units?

I was considering the avin 12" unit, but I'm a bit leery after this experience. I was hoping to not have to buy a new unit every 2 years..

Anyone had issues with the LCD on their unit and had it fixed successfully?

Thanks

I put a Kenwood in my e53. Nice unit with tons of room for growth that I want to do like an amp, new speakers, etc. Screen though is a bit washed out in my opinion for the money and I wish I would have popped a few more bucks for the next model up with HD radio. The screen, however, could simply be waiting for me to find the right contrast, brightness and other display levels.

If you do decide to upgrade to something like the Kenwood, I’d recommend spending some time on Crutchfield’s website. It will walk the dog for you after inputting your vehicle specifics and list several options. Their prices are’t rock bottom, but their customer service and technical advice is really good for an electronics rock like me. There are also lots of sound system upgrade threads on the forum.

I have the 12.3" unit and although I like it, I honestly don't like how wide it is. I think this is more a matter of not utilizing the split screen capability correctly, but looking at Google Maps is rough with such a small swath of map. I'm sure it would be a quick swap for you.

You are right...missed what forum this was posted on. I just looked at Crutchfield's equipment finder and see zero car stereo units for the E70: "Crutchfield does not recommend replacing the car stereo in your car". That stinks.

Just put the xtrons 10.25" unit in our e70. It's only been in a month, but like it so far.

I recently put an Xtrons unit (newest version with android 11 operating system 6gb ram 128ghd) in my 08 X5. Completely satisfied. Boots up extremely fast. CarPlay works great. No hiccups so far. Only slight caveat is Bluetooth and wired CarPlay cannot be connected simultaneously without CarPlay audio skipping. There is a warning that pops up telling you not to do this when CarPlay is started for the first time. Only worth mentioning if you connect multiple devices like a second phone or Bluetooth OBD tool. I purchased the xtrons “Wi-Fi” Obd tool for $12 and it works fine.

Xtrons or Avin for 12.3" Android upgrade.

So - now it's a year+ since the last post... I have a 2012 X5M and I want to do a head unit upgrade this Black Friday (this week).

I have looked at both the AvinUSA and Xtrons web sites, and they seem to have similar products. The Avin is well organized and it's pretty clear what's what, but the Xtrons web site is a mess - I still can't figure out what is different between the various models for the E70. I've read a couple of posts on forums from people who have had issues with Avin.

I am only interested in Android and Android Auto - no Apple users here, so I couldn't care less about any CarPlay issues.

Is there anyone out there that has experience with Xtrons or Avin head units in the E70? I'm looking for feedback from people who have done this upgrade. Thanks.

I had an Avin unit and it died about 2 weeks after the warranty was up. Screen discolored and became unusable.

I ended up buying this unit and having the shop install for me.
I love it, it seems to be much better quality.
I hotspot my phone and connect the unit directly to it. I use a program called Wolf launcher and it works great.

I'm not a fan of Android auto and the one issue I haven't figured a solution to with my configuration yet is using the phone. I BT direct to the vehicle but for incoming calls I need to physically access my phone. Not a big deal, but would be nice to have phone controls on screen, but that's the trade off for not being limited to what apks I can access.

I have a customized desktop screen and any apks I want. I use Spotify for tunes and use Waze for directions. I also have Tivimate set up so I can watch IPTV channels through it, and have Wyze on it as well to check security cams. I love the unit and it works great.

Do any of you know if there is any real world difference in some of these head units that have more RAM and ROM or the newest operating system?

I'm considering buying this unit from 4x4 shop since its still on sale, but its running android 11 https://4x4shop.ca/product/best-deal...al-cic-system/

Or does a guy just spend the extra money for the newest version? I wouldn't mind the bigger 12" screen https://4x4shop.ca/product/2010-2013...al-cic-system/

All I really want it to do is function as a wireless Apple CarPlay head unit. I don't need it to be anything crazy or special.
