N55 cranks, won't start

I drove my wife's 2011 X5 yesterday with no issues, other than the rough idle at start up, which i believe is in regards to the valvetronic. I replaced the valvetronic motor with one from FCP Euro maybe less than 2 years ago, but it threw a CEL recently, and put the SUV into limp mode.

This morning, it cranks but will not start. I even jumped the battery, with no luck. I get two codes.

2E0F: Valvetronic system deactivated, adjustment fault too frequent
2A61: Relay, igntiton and injection system, supply voltage, fuel ignition: line disconnection

I'm sure it will not start due to the second code.

Does anyone have any leads? I will try to start diagnosing later tonight.

ISM......bad fuse, bad relay, wiring problem, or no signal from DME. Start with relay 2 circuit and components.

Thanks for the reply. Did you screenshot this from newTIS or do you have a subscription to the BMW TIS?

Bummer that the other site got shut down.

I took out the ISM. I’ll be honest I don’t know how to read electrical diagrams all the way, let alone test them. But I did find a couple wet connections. I found this picture online so that I can pin point what areas were wet. Z11B3 and Z11B5.

I think this could very well be the problem.

Here is a google photo link of the pictures: https://photos.app.goo.gl/x6UbAFws1Ph5p24j6

I cleaned the pins on the module and connector. Both had water in them. Put it back together and I also got a 371E code: relay, ignition, and injectors, activation: line disconnection.

So I think the ism is toast. Have another one in order.

I do want to mention, this seems to have been caused by going through a car wash that we had a membership with. I also lost two of the inner tail lights with this wash. I’m done with it.

I have the same issue after hand washing in the driveway, so I expect a failed weather seal is the cause. I will report back once confirmed.

I replaced the ISM with a new one from FCP Euro. Ordered it late Thursday night, and it as here this morning. I’m in NY, so it doesn’t take fedex long to deliver from CT.

Suv started right up. I still had a code for the valvetronic, so I ran a procedure for it that you would typically run after it’s replaced, can’t remember what it’s called now. So far it seems to be well and no codes. Will see how it goes.

I found it by searching the part number. It says it won’t fit my x5, but I bought it anyways.

Thank you for the link!

It appears that FCP has incorrect part and fit descriptions.

Other sellers show the same part with correct vehicle fitment.
