Right 2nd stage brake light malfuction 2013 X5 LCI N63 XDrive 5.0

Right 2nd stage brake light out 2013 X5 LCI

VIN 5UXZV8C54D0C16665 X5 E70 LCI BMW X5 50iX. Type Code: ZV83 built April 2013

I brought my car to the dealership because the Auxiliary coolant pump was staying on and not going to sleep. The dealer replaced the AUXILIARY WATER PUMP: p/n 11-51-7-566-335. The pump was on Fuse 130, description is N63: Coolant Pump for Charge Air Cooler No. 2, Coolant Pump for Intercooler. So, $1100 later that problem is fixed.

When I got in the car to drive it home the little yellow light symbol lit up and it said "Right Two Stage Brake Light malfunction". It was late so I did not take it back to the dealer and now I’m a little confused as what to do. I know that there is a secondary brake light in the tailgate, since my car is a 2013 it does not have the white bulb holder, it’s a black bulb holder. I think that my car has a gasket for the tail light, not that sticky glue. In the owner’s manual it says that the black bulb holder snaps out. But I don't see exactly how the bulb holder snaps out. I do see a nut with a black holder that I think will release the tail light. Does anyone have any experience with 2010-2013 2nd stage brake light repair/removal? I was thinking about buying a new bulb, it’s a P21W, BMW p/n 63217160790. The whole right tail light in trunk lid unit is p/n 63-21-7-227-794.

Just looking for some advice. Should I take the tail light in trunk lid out and inspect it before buying any parts. It could be a loose wire, connection, burnt bulb etc. BMW seemed to make a change away from the sticky sealant to a gasket around 2010, so I think my car has a gasket not the sticky goo.

Here is a video for a 2012 tail light removal which is close to the brake bulb.

Also, there is a tail light led in the trunk lid, I’m not sure these are working, does anyone know how to turn on these tail lights or know what fuses are associated with these as I’m not sure these are working either.

The only code the car says is “Right second stage Brake light malfunction.”

Here is the fuse listing for my car:

One other addition is that both my front fog lights are cracked and have water in them, is there any relation between the fog lights and the right second stage brake light ?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Confirm malfunction by going somebody witness the function of the secondary braking lights.

Have somebody watch as the car is driven past them and brake forcefully. The secondary brake lights should also come on.

It's possible for bulb resistance to be higher than normal due to a bad contact but also possible just an actual burned out lamp.

I haven't had to take out any of these lamps yet so I don't know how they come out but typically either the lamp has an individual socket that comes out with a twist or a multi lamp holder comes out and the bulbs are twisted into that

Thanks for the reply. Do you know how to activate the other light that is next to the brake light in the trunk lid. I think its a tail light or led that should come on when I turn on the lights but I'm not sure, The dealer initially told me that I needed both rear trunk lights replaced. I asked him if he meant the front fog lights and he said yes. I believe the X5's before 2010 had the white brake light holder in the trunk lid. After 2010, they seemed to have switched to a black assembly. In the owners manual it says that this snaps out but I could not figure out how to do it. There is one nut that holds the assembly in place.
