Glow plug error

Hi everyone,

Like many I've had the glow plug error for #5 plug. I've read a lot of posts on this and decided to just replace the glow plug module and see if that worked (as it has for others). I found a video for replacing it without removing the inlet manifold and decided to give it a go. The guy in the video makes it look easy. It was a pain in the arse and took me a couple of hours. But, it worked and my fault code is gone. It's doable but patience is required

If never replaced; Check your engine ground cable.

X5d located on DS engine mount to bottom of frame

Mine at 99k

The Glow plug code showed up right before a no start adventure. (DIY replacement on left)

That 'replacement' seems much stiffer and will concentrate stress at the two crimps. Id bet a quick failure.

My earth cable was fine, but glad I checked. Temp is now running nicely at 88 deg C. I swear the car feels better

Also replace my glow plug controller a month ago. Had fault code on glow plug 1. Did the same as you changed controller without removing intake. Three hours but got it done. Wasted 30 mins trying to find a socket I dropped into the engine bay. Definitely a pain in the arse….

What temps is your thermostat getting to prompt you to change it?

I dropped one of the bloody nuts from the controller and spent ages trying to find it

My temps are only getting in the low 70s. Everything I've read points to around 88 deg C.

So far my coolant temp is running 79-82 so trying to decide when to thermostat. Had to do spring fix for egr so thinking of replacing egr and thermostat at same time.

So far this year fixed 1) active tank bosch heater/level sensor part replacement and 2) glow plug controller.

Thinking of doing front stabilizer links and tension struts.
