Passenger Side Axel, Too Much Play?

So, the saga continues but we're getting somewhere. I got the car back after replacing the transfer case. The shudder and jerking is gone.

However I still have a vibration under load, typically going up hill, around 40 - 50 mph. It's very noticeable.

Also, when I'm approaching a stop I get a heavy vibration / groan through the car until I'm completely at rest.

I've read places that people have experienced this sort of thing due to a failed front axel. So I put my car on the jack and checked the axels for play. The passenger side is the original axel, @265k currently. There is a slight amount of play in it where it meets the large metal drum near the engine.

Does this look like too much play? Does anyone have experience with this?

Yes, there should be no play in that direction.

I got the new axle in last week. I've been driving it since. And the vibration under load and while coming to a stop is completely resolved. The car runs and drives like new. Finally!

That's great to hear. Hope you get some trouble-free driving out of it.
