Thanks. I'll do that.

Right now, I'm leaning towards scrapping the X5. I got a quote from reputable rebuilder and I worked out that my total cost would be $16K! That includes shipping the X5. Spending that much money on 2008 X5 is just not worth it.

Maybe call the guys at FCP euro, ask if they know any local rebuilders THEY would trust? I think they are local there.

But tend to agree. Id put 25k into my E39M5. Not the X5

ard,

I'd pretty much decided to do the engine replacement if it cost under $10K and I was comfortable with the shop.

I may regret it but I'm going with a local shop to purchase and install a replacement engine (86K miles, 1 year warranty) for just over $8K + taxes. I expect to have other expenses but hopefully not too much.

I did get quotes from other shops far from me that were about $13K + local shops labor to remove and install + shipping of engine. So around $16K total. To ship the X5 instead would be about $16K total too.

Say, nobody asked...what DID happen to the motor that lead to the replacement?!?

Been going on for years. Misfiring on several cylinders. Spark plugs and ignition coils replaces. Swapped plug and coil from cylinder 1 -- good for 4 months. Swapped with cylinder 2 coil and plug. No good. Compression test OK. Suspected intermediate lever problem. 3 BMW Service visits. 2 Indy visits. Car can't pass emissions test. Registration expired. Not driveable.

BMW recommendation is to replace both banks eccentrics shafts and actuator and intermediate levers. $10K - $12K. I don't think that they were even confident that the problem would be resolved.

FYI.

I did get the engine replaced in my 2008 X5 4.8i almost a year ago. It cost close to $15K, because so many parts were replaced, but there has not been a single issue!

The X5 still feels great!

Thanks for the follow up. Who did you get the motor from and what had been done to it?

Man, you got ROBBED. You spent twice the street value on your truck for a new motor. But if that's your choice, you are allowed too !

For myself, I had to get a used engine from the wrecker where I found they had perfect intake eccentric cam pack and exhaust camshafts, I only replaced the set where I saw wear. All my misfires are now gone. For $500 the engine and $80 for a timing alignment kit. That's all on my 2007 750li with 4.8 N62

Count me in too then. I was robbed ;-)

My wife jokes about how much money I've "saved" us keeping her old X5 on the road with a new motor and a zillion other parts, along with countless hours wrenching on the thing. I remind her that an X5 project car is a lot cheaper than a real midlife crisis!
