URGENT: 2010 BMW X5 35d No communication all powertrain modules (DDE, EGS, DSC, etc)
The driver’s side had a lot of water, so I went ahead and cleaned it, but I noticed the next day an SOS malfunction came up on the screen, and we had no sound to the car. I found out that the amp got soaked with water, so that will need to be replaced. This is when the big issue happens, my wife drove the car the work and she called me later that evening. She said she went to put fuel in the car, and about a mile after leaving the gas station the car just shut down in the middle of the street and wouldn’t turn back on. We ended up having to get the car towed off the street because the car wouldn’t go into gear at all. When I got to the car, it was throwing all types of errors (Electronic fault, 4x4 malfunction, DSC Malfunction, airbag light) and also the wiper wouldn’t turn off. I have pro tool app and I ran the codes, and the first thing I noticed was that I had no access/communication to any of the Powertrain modules (DDE, EGS, DSC, EKP, etc). I looked at the codes on other modules (Ill post pics with the screen shot of the codes), and the ones that stuck out to me from the JBBF was PT-Can communication fault and a code for no communication to DDE transmitter. Here’s what I’ve done so far. Replaced battery. Check DDE for water or fuel intrusion (seems to be a common issue on E70 diesels), and it was dry as a bone. I also checked the main power feed and it had 12V power. I pulled the JBE/JB fuse box out and found corrosion all in the fuse box and on the connections of the JBBF/JBE. So, I ordered another module with a fuse box as well. I just installed it last night because I thought that was the issue, but it still did the exact same thing. I did read you have to code it, but I didn’t try to do it yet. I’m currently downloading ISTA now. I’m currently in the process of checking all the wiring in the rear hatch rear to see if I see anything crazy. My next option is to look on the driver’s side to see if anything went wrong over there. So currently I am pretty much stumped and feel defeated. It really sucks because it’s currently my wife’s daily and she needs it for work. Right now, I’m definitely looking for some urgent insight. |

You have to track down all modules that got wet and use some deoxit gold on all the connectors even near that got wet.
Scan for all modules and see if any just aren't showing up.

I seem to be having a similar issue, but no water ingress issues that I am aware of, and each time it dies, it restarts without issue..

A loose connection or a damaged wire that randomly shorts or opens is the likely culprit.

Yep a little like that but start with a macro examination. I had a recent squirrel situation that chewed through injector control wire so look for similar.

maybe check the engine sub-harness? Find it first, then while running wiggle stuff...

+1. Wiggle wiring looms while running. Clear all.codes first check codws after each test shake for codes that don't cause engine hiccup.

FWIW...years ago I remember the gassers having an issue with the engine sub harness- car would absolutely just DIE. Just coast to a stop, christmas tree on dash. All sorts of errors. Dealers would start replacing parts based on code look ups.
Good suggestion above to monitor for codes!! (that might not cause the precise hiccup) |
