Rotten eggs smell with bottom engine rattling noises

Howdy folks,

Things always happen when unexpected as I was thinking of trading in my fully loaded 2011 50i just 2 weeks ago. The N63 engine went through the massive recall back in 2015-16 if I remember correctly and I didn't really wanted to get rid of it for a while. Plugs and ignition coils were done as well circa 2017... The car has had a coolant leak I addressed just 3 weeks ago, clamps were loose on the top lines so that was pretty easy. Last Sunday morning started it up and a rotten egg smell hit me through the vents. I figured I might have picked up a rodent and did not pay too much attention. Took the car on a 250 mile trip on Monday and some rattling was starting to occur just a couple of minutes from my house. Pulled it on the ramps when I arrived home and seems like its on the bottom of the engine perhaps towards the left side if facing the car. To get to the point, I returned from a trip last night and started the car after sitting for a week... Same rotten egg smell hit me right away and bottom rattle present but not all the time, comes and goes even when driving it on a short distance(mail box). I also noticed that my power steering reservoir rattles like hell when touched, not sure what could cause it. In any event, I know the Catalytic converter will come up as number 1 culprit. I will fuel up today and see if that will cause any changes... but I am sure that's not the cause. Combined with the rattles, I hopefully have something else going on and thanks for your time accorded to this reading.

Is it possible that the rattling comes from one of the CCs??? If possible, wonder why it's not all the time... intermittent. Rattles then goes away...

That was my initial thought.

IMO other things fail and THAT leads to the cat getting fouled..damaged...broken... rattles... fuel/oil contamination...sulfur smell.

Cats on top on n63. PS shaking suggests a problem with the serpentine drive.

Take a slow motion video of the drive. Probably will have to take the fan out to do that. I've seen about one a year of harmonic balancer failure on the forum. Similar failure rate on the tensioner. Either can cause a shake that will rattle anything loose or even a stone sitting on the stiffening plate.

That of course doesn't explain sulfur smell but unless you also have an exhaust leak neither dou the cats. Sulfur from cats you'll smell behind the car. If you do have exhaust leak it can sound like pop or rattle. You should have some telltale soot likely just below the cat on the right side.

Thanks guys, sulfur is apparent when I start the car and comes through the vents for a few seconds. Will take a closer look at the drive you mentioned. Funny thing is, the engine has no rattle to the touch just the steering reservoir. Could any of you test the steering reservoir in an N63 engine while running? Wonder if it's normal?

Just took it to the car wash, pulsating feeling in the steering wheel when turning towards the ramps at low speed... jut like the reservoir. Possible to get a sulphur smell from a failing power steering unit?

Sooo, I don't have any of the problems indicated below. Full power and acceleration, the smell comes from the air vents not the exhaust and no dark smoke. No O2 sensor codes yet, hmmm.

What problems a bad catalytic converter can cause in your BMW?

If you're noticing slow engine performance, reduced acceleration, a smell of sulfur or rotten eggs from the exhaust, dark exhaust smoke, or excessive heat from under the vehicle, they are symptoms of a clogged Catalytic Converter, and it needs to get repaired soon. Nov 30, 2022

If the hood seal is intact you shouldn't get engine compartment smell in the cabin. It sounds like you got something into your cabin air filter that concentrates when sitting then blows into the cabin when you turn on the car. I would start there. Follow the symptoms with no preconceived notion

Thanks Andrew, I will swap the filter out. Any idea where the power steering pump is located? Facing the vehicle the noise is rather coming from around the left bottom. Just saw that the pump also is a large expense... not including labor.
