Mis-fueling restrictor replacement?

Something has happened to my fuel inlet as I now have to use the plastic adapter thing for EVERY pump, which is a bit of a PITA to put it mildly. Inserting the nozzle at 3 or 9 o'clock used to be an occasionally needed fix. Used to be that I needed to use the plastic adapter once or maybe twice a year...

I haven't been able to find any reference to it on fiches and I'm wondering if it might be part of part number 16-11-7-186-702, which I found here:

https://www.advantagebmwparts.com/oe...Ni1kaWVzZWw%3D

Can anyone help, please?

Thanks.

BTW, this is for a 2012 E70.

Do you have diesel? The part with the flap is steel on "spark ignition" BMWs. (I just read that yesterday on a bmw tech page how BMW referred to non diesel engines.

Ouch I was hoping the steel part was a separate piece but looks like you would have to replace the whole filler hose if something is wrong with the fill restrictor.

I have a piece of plastic hose came with injector cleaner that I use to pin the flap open and pour in additives is that the concept we are talking about?

Did the flap break stuck in a way that splashes fuel back into the filler nozzle and shuts off the flow?

I found used on eBay less than half price of new.

Sorry, I wasn't clear - yes, this is diesel.

I don't think we are talking about the same thing - there is no flap, but a pair of (apparently) stainless steel that are pushed back by the filler nozzle tube.

For whatever reason, this mechanism is no longer working and so will have to be repaired or, more likely, replaced.

What I am trying to find out is whether that mechanism is part of the fuel tube I mention in the original post or something additional.

The unleaded have a different style but same issue need to replace entire fill pipe it seems. I don't know how diesel can protect against unleaded. The other way is easy.

Do you KNOW with 100% certainty that the entire fill pipe has to be replaced, or is this an opinion?

Mine is a struggle on some pump nozzles, but not on others. Sorry, I don't have any input other than to say that mine sometimes gives me fits too. Once, I gave up and drove to a different station, as no matter how much I wiggled and fidgeted with the nozzle, it would NOT go in.

AM.

16117186702 is the correct part number for diesel.

There is no separate part for the inlet funnel so I see no other option.

I haven't worked on diesel so I don't know a DIY around.
