N63 valve guides

Hello,

I’m preparing to rebuild an N63 and I’m not finding any information about the valve guides. I haven’t found the valve guides as an available part, either genuine or aftermarket, for the S63 or N63. Has anyone replaced the valve guides on an N63, inspected them, or maybe have a bare head on hand to inspect?

Bump

I’m a little surprised this information isn’t on the forums already.
Accepting most 50ix owners would be having someone else rebuild the engine for them I would think the topic of what to do about those sloppy valve guides would come up.

Maybe check a machine shop forum? ? Guides are usually pretty much generic and it's up to the machine shop what they do about resleeving/inserts/replacement/refitting.

I’m not sure what forum that would be or that it’s really that generic of a question. I myself am going to take my heads to my head guy but I wouldn’t/am not just going to drop them off and leave it to him to figure out.

There are what 9,999,999,999,999 threads on various owner threads about valve seal replacement? It seems to me that people asking that question aught to be running into info about the guides while they are at it. It’s my understanding that BMW changed the guides with one of the technical updates to the N63 to help with the oil burning. I think they changed the seals with the first TU and the guides with TU3. To me that would indicate the possibility that they found premature guide wear contributed to seal failure.

I think it would be good to know what they changed when considering what I want to do with mine.

BMW lists replacement valve guides for most of their engines. Several aftermarket manufacturers also list replacement valve guides for most BMW engines. Nobody lists guides for the N63/S63 or their technical updates. Nobody is curious why? People have build these engines; people know.

The people that know are the machine shops working on the heads, they are not on DIY forums. If you don't trust your "head guy," who should know more than anyone on a DIY forum, then look for a different one.

I hear ya…

I just don’t agree. I trust my head guy but guides aren’t as generic as you think and as much trouble as these engines are to pull and break down I would most likely want to give him new manganese bronze guides to install rather than leave him with K liners (the only generic option) as his only option.
