massive oil leak

I hav 07 x5 with 4.8,it suddenly started leaking oil ! a steady stream on drivers side! so I assumed it was the infamous alt bracket gasket !
so after 6 hrs,I got to it!! it was bone dry !
so I was wondering if I drain all oil from car and filled with smoke to find leak would it cause any internal damage ? and has anybody ever done this sort of detection ??
any advice on this matter would be great !!
