Carbon buildup on oil filter?

Strange I've not seen this before with the build up on the ends of the filter, at least this bad. 2009 X5 deleted, about 5,000 miles on this oil change. Is that amount of build up a concern or maybe some part of the oil filter holder has failed? Maybe it wasn't sitting right?
