Deleted 35d diesels - Passing Emissions
I have two aging X5 35d cars, 2011 and 2012 that I need to delete. One is due for yet another EGR Cooler and a leaky DEF system, the other has a bad NOX and leaking tank. Great cars, great engines, meticulously serviced but its time to do a delete. I live in a state that does emissions testing every two years, no visual, no sniffer, just an OBD2. Are there any tunes that mimic monitor readiness so I can still pass? I see tons of people in my state driving with deleted Ds and they still pass... Feel free to DM if you prefer Thank you

The EPA jas cracked down on deletes, especially in the pickup truck world and has used forum posts and information as evidence of violations that supported investigation and ultimately prosecution. People are hesitant to give their hookup or advice because it could be used against them. I'll simply say it's unlikely, but it depends. Is the test checking for smoke or visual haze, or are NOx and/or soot quantified. A deleted diesel may pass the first test, but certainly not the second type. Besides, removing or tampering with emissions equipment is illegal and you should not do anything like that ever.

Thanks for the reply! You're absolutely right about them cracking down, and I dont want to get into the politics of that and I certainly done want to get anyone in trouble, so this is all hypothetical.
My state doesnt do visual inspections, sniff or any actual testing. They just plug into the OBD2 for monitor readiness. My cars are clean and mostly stock, usually the tech is surprised to find its a diesel........unlike my Powerstroke and Cummins trucks. So my understanding is the tune just has to fool the stock ECU into believing the monitors' parameters are met so they pass.

That's basically what the tune does, but it doesn't have to, at least all of them; just those that result in limp mode or no operation technically. Many people are surprised BMW made diesels and more surprised an SUV like the X5 was offered with one. I think the requirements are stupid, but that's mostly because the systems are entirely unreliably and expensive to repair -although aftermarket NOx sensors, DPFs and SCRs are finally becoming available for some vehicles - and generally totally and poorly understood and economically repaired by the so-called dealer technicians. That, and there's were other emissions control methods that are as effective and more reliable, but that reduces profit margin, inflates the price which reduces diesel sales, and removed an absolutely considered source of profit over the lofetime of a vehicle.

Agreed on all counts. The system was clearly an after thought engineered to meet the preposterous requirements at the expense of reliability and longevity. Its existance on the car just irritates me, I've tolerated it but the time has come to delete it.

I just learned today that the operation I used to procure the hardware and software to delete my e70 years ago has shut down. Or at minimum gone into hiding within the confines of his old shop and shut down the website.
Good luck on finding a source these days. The EPA has been cracking down harder and harder on deletes over the years. As mentioned it's prevalent on the 3/4 and 1-ton diesel trucks (Duramax, Cummins, Power Strokes, etc), primarily in states that don't do emissions testing. |

yea, thats what I'm seeing. I honestly figured it would have become more popular as these cars get older/cheaper it would drawm more aftermarket options.

It is extremely popular, it's just regardless of individual states' enforcement and specific requirements, it still remains illegal to tamper with or render these systems inoperable per federal rules and regulations. The federal authorities finally put their money where their mouth is and investigated and prosecuted violators. As a result, these services and products are no longer widely or openly advertised. That's what you're running into.
