BMW and Mercedes are known for putting old body shells on upcoming models for people to spy on, http://www.bilnorge.no/export/bb_42712.jpeg these lights look nothing like the new 5 series, what it supposed to be based on, nor do any of the fronts. To prove my point, heres a C63 AMG http://news.caradisiac.com/IMG/jpg/Mercedes-C63-AMG.jpg it supposed to be based on an 08, however it looks like the C55 in disguise.

Also to the gentleman who seen the new X5 at a convention in New Jersey, can you post a pic of the front and rear that appear the most genuine? Im anxious to see how badly they f*cked the X5 up, looks like they f*cked up the new E92 M3 too. Excuse my language kiddies..

And BTW, thats an X3. Clearly that model looks smaller than the current X5, and the new X5 supposed to be 3-4'' bigger, enough to hold 7 passengers.

I hear ya loud and clear! Last year between 70000 and 80000 kilometers, I swear the X5 spent one day out of every 7 at the dealer for something. Many parts' shelf lives seem to end at this age...

I made a thread about this back then, but aside from the problems that had to be fixed, I was afraid of keeping the X5 for financial reasons. See, the BMW dealers offered me $27000 and $28500 for the X5. LOL - I mean, that is so low, that I just laughed at the guy. I told him - find me another X5 like this, and I'll buy it from you right now for $27000 - I'll have a fleet of X5s. They were kidding around with the trade-in price so badly that it was insulting. Mind you, that was this winter in January.

I went to Mercedes, who gave me around $37000, which was market price. And the Benz dealer also discovered that the car had been hit from behind, I had a new hatch, new paint job out back, and that both my rear doors were repainted. So much for certified BMW cars, I say...

The X5 is one of those cars that seems to lose its value much quicker. Same thing for BMW's 7 Series. Whereas the 5 and 3 keep their value much better it seems. The X5 is beginning to look like the Lincoln Navigator to me in terms of finance. BMW wants big money for a new one, but you can get it for tremendous discounts used, even as a demo.

But with the 3 and 5, they don't lose much value. Each year, they seem to hit a certain value, and no matter how many kilometers they have or options, the price just doesn't go below this. Now THAT is car to have if you wanna keep capital.

Maintained value

Very strange how the same car has varying retained value in different countries. In the UK the X5 has one of the highest retained values after 3 years than any other car on the market. It has only just dropped from 72% to 70% due to the new model coming out. The only other car in the UK to match that is the Mini Cooper S cabriolet which retains 72% after 3 years. It is the only reason we were able to afford the payments (contract hire) due to the deferred amount being so big (offset). Average retained values in the UK run at 50 - 55% for VW's down to 40 - 50% for Fiats and Citroens (all based on 3 yrs running 10 - 12000 miles a year). Diesels have higher retained values than their petrol counterparts due in part to the lower pollution output, longevity and better fuel consumption. And no, the petrol X5's don't retain their value as well as the diesels.

Diesels also keep their value better here. Both in Canada and the US we don't have many diesel consumer cars at all yet.

But taking the Mercedes E320 CDI as an example (the first diesel sedan in North America), it drops in value slower than its E350 petrol counterpart.

For instance...a brand new petrol E350 has a base price (starting price) of $74300 Canadian, and a brand new E320 CDI has a base price of $69800.

So at base price, we already have a difference of $4500. The petrol costs more.

Now if I just go to Benz's certified car site, and search for two identical vehicles...I come up with:

2005 E320 CDI Certified Used 12000KM No Options - $64900
2005 E350 Certified Used 12500KM Xenons - $67500

Despite the petrol E350 having Xenon headlight, which is a roughly $1000 option, it has still dropped $7800. The E320 CDI has only dropped $4900.

The market right now in Toronto doesn't have many diesels in stock, so I can't re-enforce my point with more examples. But I've done many searches in the past, and diesels hold their value better.
