Are you sure about this? Rather than all the aggro for repairs (detonation/susp) I'm considering just a quick swap into a run out E53 4.8......

It's not an M5. It is a prototype of the new Auto/Steptronic shifter that supposedly will be used in the E60 as well as the E70. The trim plate around the shifter in this prototype is borrowed from an M5, but it is not an actual M5. M5's don't have Auto/Step transmissions. SMG transmission shifters have never had a "P" for park like Automatics do but this one has it as a pushbutton on top of the shifter.

Is this going to be BMWs standard transmission, replacing the current automatics, or is it supposed to be a SMG replacer which they will newly offer in the X5?

Yes, but as a replacement for the various SMG transmissions.

This appears to be a steptronic/automatic gear selector.

As far as I now ZSG is supposed to be a replacement for SMG, so I don't know why it would have a "P" like an automatic. This seems to be a shift-by-wire shifter with a pushbutton "Park". It seems to be like the steering wheel shifter of the E65 7 series with the added ability to shift manually when pulled to the side.

Not exactly the E65 shifter and you are right on the shift-by-wire. Next generation of steptronic I guess.

Anyone from Mexico checking this thread? I swear I saw a silver E70 in Cancun leaving the airport. I didn't have time to take a pic, and I was travelling in the opposite direction. It looked like the spy photos here posted by LeMans but w/o tape anywhere.

If anyone in Mexico reads this, keep an eye out!
