3.0i VS. 3.0si ????

What does the "s" in 3.0si stand for and why does the 4.8i not have it? The outgoing US E53 models were called 3.0i, 4.4i, and 4.8is So why has the 3.0 changed from "i" to "si"?........and why is the new 4.8 still an "i"? Maybe bacause a 4.8si might be confused with the old 4.8is and people may think it's the replacement to the old "is"???

The "s" in 3.0si is not for "Sport" because the Sport package is a separate option and if it were Sport it would have been called "is". So what does the 3.0si have to require an "s" in the model designation?

Its do differentiate between the low output N52's and the high output N52's...

See the 325i & 330i's all have the same 3.0 engine, its just that the 325 version is detuned and has a few exhaust modifications. While this didn't make much sense for the 3 lineup, it makes sense in the Z4 lineup (3.0i & 3.0si - which correlates with detuned and full power).

Although the X5 will probably never get the N52 3.0i, it's 3 liter engine will still be called 3.0si as to not create confusion across the line-up.

Why a detuned engine you ask? Apparently its was easier to meet U.S. emissions that way... (Europe has a true 2.5 liter engine).

Ahhh......OK. I knew about the E90/E60 setup where the US 330i/530i have the same 3.0 engine as in Europe and the 325i/525i have a detuned 3.0 instead of the Euro 2.5. However, I was not aware that this translated into a 3.0i and 3.0si on the Z4. Thanks, now it makes sense.

So is the new X% getting both 3 liter engines or just the highoutput. Im confused now. I thought it was only getting the ho 260hp version. Why would they bother putting the 225hp version in anyway

It will only get the 260hp version, but as xx3 suggested BMW is probably using the "si" designation because it is the higher powered 3.0 engine (even though they will not use the lower powered one on the X5 anyways).

The E70 is getting the higher output model only. I don't know what Sanguru is talking about, because the detuned 3.0 is 215hp... (225hp has to do with the old engines and nothing with the E70 or the new BMW lineup).

Its just so that you can compare the engines across the board. It would be confusing to have an X3 with a 3.0i engine with 215 hp, another X3 with a 3.0si 255 hp engine and then the X5 3.0i with 255 hp (instead it will be X5 3.0si). This is why the badge the X5 like the X3 & Z4 so that its clear to the consumer what engine they are getting.

The is badge will probably return later on the top of the line V8. My guess is that by then the I6's will have reconsolidated (with fuel injection - N53/N54) and there will no more be 2 versions of the same engine...

Yea i heard the sixes are all getting direct injection next year and the 3.0TT in the 335 already has it and the new 4.8 has it too. Is this true?

BMW will definitively do it, the question is when and for which lineup...
