I have active steering on my E60 and certainly wish it was on the X. I think it is definetely worth paying for since the X can sometimes be a pain in the royal bum to move around in tight spaces.

Anyone know if Active Steering can be retrofit into an 03 or 04?

I have Active Steering on my E60 545i and I LOVE it. I will never get another BMW without that option. After driving my 545 with AS for a few days and then going back to my E36 M3, it felt like I was driving a bus (the M3 did), let alone my wife's X5. The steering on the 545 feels so much sharper and more "sporty" than my other car's, including the M3. There were some issues with the AS on earlier E60's, but a couple of software mods (and a rumored hardware change) in the first year fixed it. By the time AS was put on the E90 even the BMW hating car magazines liked it.

Active Steering is now probably my favorite option on my 545, and as I said I will never get another BMW without it (as long as it is offered as an option).

Don't even think about it......you have a better chance of putting a manual transmission into an X5 4.4i.
