Satellite Radio on 2007 X5 in Canada?

The dealer tells me it's not available, but it will be. He suggests I pickup a portable unit. I really don't want to spend $90k and then have wires hanging all over the place.

Does anybody know if my car is wired for Sirius (or XM)? If it's just a module or something, I could buy one in the US and have it installed.

I believe it is pre-wired and it will be a module. BMW Canada has not struck a deal with Sirius in Canada, thus the delay.

Would it be possible just to buy the module from the US and install it?

I am not sure. It may be a different module for subscription purposes, Unless you can bill through an American adress and pay US$. Try calling BMW Canada Customer Service 1-800-567-2691. Let us know what you find out.

I just checked the Canadian features docs posted on this site and it says that it is pre-wired for Satellite Radio.

I have written to Sirius Canada to see if it is possible to activate a US Sirius unit in Canada, I do not want a grey-market subscription. If it is possible, I will order on-line and have it installed here. I will post an update when I get one from Sirius

You can activate a US bought Sirius unit in Canada, and vice versa. I've already done it on my boat. One thing, though, I actually bought the lifetime package for my boat, and had to use the US service since Canada doesn't offer it.

Reply from Sirius Canada

"if you purchase a American unit you are able to activate with SIRIUS Canada, but we do not guarantee you will receive all Canadian content. Have a great day!"

What the heck does that mean - not able to receive all Canadian content they would code the unit to not receive some channels despite the subscription? This is really strange.

They have different channels and "apparently" some of the earliest Sirius units couldn't display those channels. I think its totally BS, since my sirius unit on my old boat was 4 years old and worked fully with Canadian content.
