why did BMW build the tire pressure monitoring system half assed???
why can't the bmw system tell you the pressure in each tire... so we know when to fill it up a bit and can keep all tires appropriately equal. they did this job half assed. |

Why is it necessary? It is over complicating the issue for the sake of doing it. Is it really necessary to know three tires are at 32psi and one tire is at 30psi, or is it more important to know when one tire is at 24psi? A tire at 30psi while the others are at 32 is not dangerous, but a tire at 20-24psi on a vehicle weighing 2 tons is a problem. I guess it is just a matter of opinion, but it is not half assed.

I suspect they put that system on because:
-a tire press monitoring sys. can be marketed to Buffy & Biff. -NHSTA and the other genius bureaucracies have data that show most drivers check their tires when they go flat. -the Teuton bean counters got involved and beat out the engineers. -A real time system maybe coming in the future. I have real time TP data on my Vette...it is interesting to watch and it would give me an early warning indication, espc. on longer drives when one might be lulled into not paying much attention. Is it 100% accurate, I doubt it, but it's nice to have. The in wheel sensor does complicate a tire change, I'm told. BR,mD Last edited by motordavid; 01-10-2007 at 11:22 AM. |

My 350Z did the same thing MD, reading off individual tire pressure....neat to watch but aside from that, I'll take the BMW yellow light

Yeah I wish it said WHAT tire but overall I have found it to be quite sensitive and overall very good

Usually when it's low you can tell which tire(s) is the culprit but now that I have an 07 Suburban which tells the pressure in each tire, it takes that small half-step out of the equation but it's not a deal maker/breaker for me.

with the run flat tires, you might not be able to tell which one is low from looking at it. i hope you don't have to check each of them manually after seeing the low pressure warning go off. |

Yes, a lamp just lights up. It doesn't tell you which tire is low.
On a sidenote, I think it was on the Infiniti Q45 where is took the pressure of all it's tire and told you how much psi was in each wheel in a list on the monitor...it just didn't say which pressure corresponds to which wheel. |
