Car Magazine article on X5

While i was at BN today, i read the Car Magazine has an article on X5. There are some interesting points i never saw on this forum.
1. The chief project engineering Albert Biermann said the new 4.8i will lap the Nurburgring 10 seconds faster than the ourgoing 4.8is. (From what i read on this forum, the old 4.8is is slightly faster than the new 4.8i. but it seems the other way around according to Albert Biermann)
2. There will be some upcoming engine i never heard of.
First, a hybird drivetrain co-developed with GM and DaimlerChrysler
Second, a low pressure direct injection trubocharged V8 good for over 400bhp. ( i think this is the 4.4 biturbo people are talking about on this forum)
Third, a 300bhp state-of-the art twin-turbo diesel. (i think this will be a perfect engine for X5)

The magazine doesn't meantion anything about turbo gas engine on X5. but when i think about it.. if they are going to put a 300hp turbo diesel in X5, it doesn't make sense to put another 300hp turbo gas engine.

another interesting thing is, the E70 X5 3.0d will available starting in April in europe. BMW just said they will have BIN5 diesel avialable for American market in 2008. If both are true, then the current 3.0 diesel engine will have very short product life.

No, the magazine is called "Car Magazine" I believe it is published in England, but most Barnes & Noble have it. It is January 2007 issue, by the way.

No, it didn't say when the new engine will come out. My guess is the 300hp twin-turbo diesel will come in 2008 when BMW introduce 50 states legal diesel in the US.
I believe hybird is at least 2 years away, as the hybird technologies are not mature yet. However, BMW just introduced break power regeneration and stop and go engine turn off in the "New" 5-series. Those 2 technologies are essencial in hybird cars.

The twin Turbo Diesel is already availble on most BMW in Europe (Ex :535d, 290hp). This Engine will most likely be available on the 2008 X5. The 3.0d (235hp Diesel) will be released in Europe in March 07.

Lap times are not necessarily based on speed alone. Suspension and handling are critical factors in determining lap times. The E70 is not as quick as the outgoing X5 but the new active suspension allows it to lap the ring faster.

thank you, so i guess BMW will further improve the twin-turbo diesel and put it on X5.

another question for those in europe. What's the price difference between a single turbo diesel to twin turbo diesel? for example, 530d VS. 535d? Both are pretty much the same engine except one extra turbo.

X5 hybrid is in works.
