Help

I am shopping/buying a vehicle for my beloved wife. We have been the route and have narrowed it down to the new 2007 X5 4.8 with everything and the GL 450 with everything. I want to buy her the most prestigious and blah blah so she has the best of what an SUV has to offer.
What is the consensus?
I know this is a BMW forum.

Does the GL feel like driving a truck? The E70 feels more like a car and therefore more comfortable whether on short or long trips. If you need the room then it is the GL.

I spent the last 2 weeks test driving everything including the Q7, MDX, Range Rover Sport, X5 and several others....and just moments ago purchased the X5.

IMO it was the clear winner, despite the fact that they are hard to find and negotiate . I had to buy from a dealer 600 miles away to get what I wanted, a loaded 3.0 X5.

what are you looking for. whats best depend on whether it fulfill your need
range rover- best off road car
gl - most space, most comfortable
cayenne turbo - fastest acceleration, a lot of hp and torque
bmw - most tech toys, better handling then most. etc

The GL is huuuuge! I wouln't want to park that thing, but it has also gotten great reviews.
The X5 is more compact, while still being sporty and luxurious.

The Cayenne is only nice when you load it up with pricey options, and you still have a less sophisticated (mechanically) vehicle than the E70.

Range Rover Sport is more expensive, much more trucky, gets less fuel economy, and is not reliable, but has the image and the looks.

Mercedes-Benz ML, even though you didn't mention, is too girly IMO in Ml500 form. You need ML63 to be okay. (oh, right, this is "for your wife")

VW Touraeg doesn't have the brand image, but, especially the new one, seems to be a very good SUV with lots of features. Still, it's a VW.

Lexus RX350 is definately chick-mobile, and drives poor next to the others. Pass on this one.

Hope this helps you! Good Luck!

I just read the internal MB sales flash on the X5. Their point of comparison is to the ML and having driven the GL and ML I would agree. The GL is a much bigger vehicle. I foud the Diesel to be best - very linear power, and like the best of MB turbo diesels there is virtually no lag. That said - I do not believe in off roading in a $50k plus vehicle with metallic paint (unless the metalic is rust).

The X5 is more of a sports vehicle. In reading the sales material, it is clear that MB sees it as a "formidable product".
