haha....I guess that's where you and me differ....
(IMHO, I can't stand Toyota...way to goodie-goodie, we're the best because we have good reliability (not the case anymore) and too artsy/enviromentalist... )
Isn't this thread about the X5 and GL? Carry on...

BMW all the way. Had two X5`s and they and BMW have been great.
Had a 320cdi ML now for twelve months, great car, but MB UK and the dealers are a different story. Had cosmetic and other faults upon delivery and its taken me until now to get MB to admit the problems.
I was about to go to Court with them, but at the last moment, the Mercedes dealer settled out of court.
I will never have another MB.
My new X5 is for 1st March, car`nt wait!

She currently has an X3 but with 2 kids and 2 car seats that doesn't leave much room, plus I have never been a fan and ride/quality are both scary...
Anyway, love the X5 look, have had few BMWs before. Form all accounts it is a great drive but wonder how it will translate on the low quality UK roads. I cannot drive it here until late April but I am also considering a GL 320 CDi, big car for the roads here in the UK so it might be fairly impractical. On the other hand, it is actually an inch narrower than the X5 and only 6 inches longer and it has 2 real seats in the 3rd row.
As I said I have a 4 and 2 yr old but with the school runs, every single time we try to have a 3rd kid it is really a pain and that would be the main occasional use of the 3rd row seats. Also when we have family visiting it is obviously a plus.
Performance is better on the X5 but only 1 sec on 0-60 so not a huge deal to me and certainly not for the wife...
The ride of the GL is great, off road creds fantastic but useless to me. (drove the car at Brooklands the new Merc showcase dealership and they have an offroad testing ground along with a full track nice!)
Never owned a Merc before and the interior is OK but nowhere near as nice as the X5 is (at least from what I can tell of X5 pictures). The space factor is nonetheless the key plus along with a great ride quality.
Clealry I am going to get BMW biaised views here but nevertheless would love to hear the board thoughts on the 2 cars...
Much appreciated
Thanks

cpd1 If it was me then honestly I would have niether car. Not sure of your budget but if you can push the boat out a bit and go for the

Full Fat Range Rover TDV8 it's a cracking car. Lick the pants of the Merc and BMW anyday.

I agree the TDV8 engine is very good and probably one of the best diesels on the market at the moment but in my opinion its not as good a vehicle as others mentioned here or available in so many ways, accepting that is road presence and kerb appeal, I did come close to buying one recently, had the deposit down on a TDV8 HST but after a bit more research and a lot of test drives decided against it and have kept my order on the new X5 (I already had a deposit down for over a year, (just in case) delivery now April 17th).

With all that said and as I understand it, your priority is space, with that being the case IMO you shouldnt go for the RRS it is not that large internally especially in the rear. But dont take my word for it go and have look yourself.

true of the RRS but not of the FFRR re space but if space is what cpd1 wants then he should consider the LR D3 alot more car and toys for the money than a X5 plus it can go offorad. Not sure if this would make much difference but the LR sound Systems and bluetooth satnav etc etc far out preforms any in the BMW range.
