Hi Pete

I' keen to get it retrofitted too, but not had the discussion yet. Did you see the pdf posted about it recently?

Hi,
I have seen a few posts on this but not as I recall the pdf posted.

I know the Retro-fit Part number is Part #: 65410412881 but from what I have seen this is a glovebox fitted connection, from what I understand of the factory fitted connection its located in the centre console as a USB connection.

As all my music is PC/iPod based I am keen to get this option. The dealer said I could use the Aux connection but from my previous experience of this, there is no steering wheel control or visual interface on the iDrive and most problematic of all a reduced sound quality. Hence I am really keen to get this fitted before I take it.

Maybe you could speak to your dealer and see what his take is on it?

does not read as a dealer fit option would be possible.

I am sure you should be able to hook the ipod direct so you can use the MFSW for everything and not use the Aux connector but will it be available straight away.

DMS??? tuning how will this effect you warranty. surprised that the dealer will do this for you.??

Dunedin John Martin group bit of a price war going on at the moment between them and Eastern.

Thanks Fastbuck I appreciate the link.

On the basis of the pdf I would agree with Scottie but I suppose the retro must use the same wiring harness or be just the iPod connection rather than USB but would be more overt in terms of the fitting location perhaps why the Canadian accessories catalogue shows it in the glove box? As long as I can get the MFSW control and full visual on the screen I dont mind. The CD changer or USB connection is of no consequence to me.

What is this DMS tuning is it a chip or software upgrade? On the matter of installation and warranty I would have to agree with Scottie going on previous upgrade experience with my BMW dealer, also how have they proven this upgrade against this particular model and engine so soon?

Smile GL is no match for the X5

If you like a big, isolated and floaty ride the GL is your match. This is
fine for some - more of a GL Tahoe. I love the CDI 320 Option - but the
ride is unconnected and floaty smooth-but solid.
.
The X5 is simply point & shoot with the ability to carve its own path.

A GL450 with the off-road package (in the States) has ADSII and rides fairly firm for a big SUV- much better than any GM or Ford product. It's actually not bad at all.
I debated a GL vs. X5 and the GL wins on third-row seating, autotailgate, steering wheel shifters, 7-speed tranny, less weight, and rear seat DVD (screens in the headrests).
The X5 does drive like a sports sedan, has a better HP/weight ratio, nicer looking interior IMHO, and better reliability. It does cost more than a GL and dealers are discounting GL's more heavily than X5's.

It is a close call to me...if you have kids, it's even closer.

for truly family oriented driving, the GL is the best choice. it is larger and more comfortable. there have been a lot of discounts on mercedes products lately, including the R, which also is very nice (but has that bug-eyed look). at some of the current leases now (in sf), you can lease an GL and an E for the price of a loaded 4.8.

Sorry fellows I have been travelling for few days.
Thanks for all the input for the X5 vs GL. I think the GL is treated a bit unfairly in terms of ride they all come with the off road here in the UK and the ride is nowhere near as bad as it has been described. A fully loaded 3.0d X5 is basically the same money than a GL. The space factor is really nice but on UK roads that thing is BIG.
I have briefly looked at the Q7, not a bad car but quite possibly the worst packaging I have seen out there. Same length as a GL, much wider but somehow the room inside is poor, the 2nd row barely accomodate 3 abreast and it seems the 3rd row seats have even managed to be smaller than on the X5, clearly an achievement.
The X certainly remains the favorite and thr quality of the Merc dealers is presumably very poor...
As far as the Range Rover is concerned, think the sport is way too small for the car, the RR is nice but no 3rd row seat, ride very smooth but certainly doens't drive like a saloon, by a very long shot. The interior is nice though. But quality and reliability are scary. The Disco is spacious but certainly no premium vehicle inside, very plasticky and that thing just weight tons and has no go, the diesel engine barely manages to break 13s to 60mph, borderline dangerous. Good offroad vehicle though.
Money is not so much the issue and as a driving tool, I always have my 997 C4S for the daily commute
The X is really looking like the best blend out there, can't wait for the 1st UK cars to check them out. I am planning a European driving hols in August so that would be a good way to run it in. Initially read the 3.5d will be available late '07 but don't think I can be that patient...
