Aftermarket headrest mounted units are much better and the OEM DVD can't be seen from the third row seat. Spend the $$ elseware

I did not want the unit, but it came with the X5 I found in stock.
Here are my observations; 1. The kids LOVE IT! My X5 is now their favorite ride. (they are 7 and 9) 2. I do not like the way it folds onto the front arm rest, its not in the way, but its in the way. 3. The screen is in the center and pivots either direction which is nice. 4. It is a bit low, but the kids dont complain. 5. I would not prefer the headrest mounted units, I think they look bad IMO + I dont want to replace my comfort seats, you would have to shoot me first. 6. It integrates with the Idrive in that you can turn off the controls and prevent the back seat from using it. + it integrates with the sound system. 7. You have the option to play thru the stereo sound, or thru head sets. The wireless headsets work great. You can also use wired headsets. 8. There is also an aux input to hook up an Xbox or Nintendo...nice for vacation Overall, I still would not add it if I was custom ordering, but only because the kids primarily ride with my wife and rarely ride in my X5. If on the other hand, this was the primary vehicle for the kids, I would order the factory option over non-factory retrofit.

I intially selected it, I have a 2 and 4 yr old and we are planning a long drive over the summer plus the X5 will be my wife daily driver for the school runs and so on. However I am now considering not selecting it for few reasons:
1. Location of the screen debatable, plus as per X5FX comments will be in the way when folded 2. I can see my little guy making it his #1 goal in life to kick it with his foot when raised 3. Functions cannot be controlled from the i-drive, as X5FX mentions it can be turned off but U cannot start the DVD or skip or change disc from the front...That's a major pain. 4. Being in the UK but having lived in the US for few years, most DVDs I have are Reg 1 so I need multi-region. 5. No DVD changer Obviously these are derived from reading and great contributions from this forum's members since my X5 won't be here til Jun-Jul. No doubt it will cost me more to go for a nice after mkt solution and the comfort seat headrest sare an issue. I might drop the pano sunroof and go for flip downs, the wife is not a huge fan of the pano sunroof anyway. C |
