I believe the CD changer does NOT reduce any space from the glove box. I remember seeing an X5 without the Sound Package that had a plate covering that area. I think it takes up space in the dash that would otherwise be empty. I'm not positive about this so maybe someone without the Sound Package can chime in here.

The CD changer is mounted flush to the back of the glovebox. It does not take up any extra space.

Continuing in the fine Off Topic tradition...

Actually, I'm glad to get the CD changer. I think it will come in handy for a number of reasons:

1) I have friends who are musicians, and friends who run studios; they're always passing around recent work for me to check out. It's almost always on CD. Sure, I could rip it to my iPod, but that's an extra step.

2) I take out books on CD from the library, as well as other spoken-word stuff. It's all on multiple CDs.

3) Er, I own over 2000 CDs. They're not all on my iPod yet!

Sure, I've got gigabytes of content not on CDs; but choice is good.

And I'm glad to see that the BMW changer is slot-loading instead of using a cartridge like my current car (which is way back behind a panel in the cargo area). But in the GLOVEBOX? Does BMW have any idea how much junk I've got floating around in there? I'll probably never even catch a glimpse of the thing, and when I do it'll be choked with detritus...

I wouldnt do w/o a CD changer, my 1984 joke was intended to say;

This is a very outdated model, most car manufactures today (even GMC) use an in-dash model that is much faster and not as noisey. BMW on the other hand gives us 2 CD players, on single in-dash, and the 6-CD in the glove box.
My wifes 2000 (yes thats 7 years old) Yukon has a superior CD changer in dash that also offers 1) shuffle mode between all 6 disks, and 2)on screen display of track names.

Anyone notice that when you open your doors the 6CD in the glove box starts "clunking", reloading all the disks?...this happens before you even start the X. I think the reason they put it in the glove box is the noise level .

Again, what they give us is technology from 1984. I think they must have bought a warehouse full of them in the former Soviet Union and wont update the units until they are all gone.
