Can one get 4.8 tailpipes for 3.0? Ipod Question as well.

I am getting a 3.0d and wondered if one could change the exhaust tailpipes the 3.0d look so poor in comparison to the 4.8. Perhaps one can buy it as an after fit accessory.
Will one be able to retrofit an ipod interface to work on the Nav display.

The accessory iPod interface is a £395 option in the UK fitted. I can't see BMW doing the exhaust tip conversion, but I have fingers crossed that one of the after market companies will soon.

My question is... Why?

The different pipes identify your vehicle from behind. For those that paid for the 4.8 enjoy standing out and for what they paid.. they should.

In my opinion... others will notice pipes that quickly identify your vehicle as 4.8 and then observe you have the 3.0 model. I have actually seen this done and it looked so stupid. The pipes did not even fit correctly.

I have also seen people debadge their vehicle. Anyone with a 4.4 or 4.8 would never do this so it tells everyone that you have the 3.0 anyway.

If you wanted the oval pipes... you should have ordered the 4.8 model. If BMW meant for you to be able to customize the pipes... it would have been an option at design time.

Point being... don't waste your time trying to look like a 4.8 model. In the end your car will look ridiculous.

And who made you the Chief of the style police my friend? If your gas cost $8 a gallon you'd maybe understand. There's also the "planet" to consider if money alone doesn't float your boat.

I could see your point if someone was attaching the 4.8 badges to a lower model, but nothing else.

Well friend.. What does the price of gas have to do with being a poser?

If gas price is such an issue then you should be purchasing something that gets 30 MPG minimum and not an X5. Do you really need one? No! You want one. You also want the best one out there but you cannot afford to own it or fill it with gas. So the next best thing it to make it look the same.

You get the oval pipes with the 4.8.. enough said! Anyone who buys an expensive BMW does so because it is a nice automobile and for status. To help others identify your model easily you get oval pipes.

The 4.4 also came with the double pipes. The 3.0 has always had the single pipes. Anyone that changes their pipes is trying to change the look of their car to the higher model. Do the oval pipes look better, sure! But BMW did this with a purpose. It keeps the models separate and identifiable.

Anyone who modifies their vehicle by adding a cosmetic item that comes ONLY ON A HIGHER MODEL is a poser!

I can see you buying the 4.8 badge and justify its application due to high gas price.

Chief Out!

remember it's not all about money...I could have easily gotten a 4.8 if I wanted, or heck, even an M6 if I so desired. I didn't want to be stopping at a gas station every few days, nor do I need a V8. The i6 provides adequate power for sitting in traffic and cruising 30mph roads. I also didn't want to be spewing more emissions than I needed to.

Just because you're clearly a tosser, doesn't mean that everyone else here is. What will you do with your pedals if the 4.8is has them? I doubt you'll get rid of them even if they do have a little bit of function in addition to their aesthetic attributes.

Beefy, if you go to an exhaust shop they can cut your 3.0d tips and weld on the 4.8 ones. Simple job.
