4.8 Underpowered compare to 4.4

Hi guys,

I was reading the Automobile magazine and they mentions how good the X5 is compared to the other offerings (ML63, RRS, Porche, etc). It mentioned at the end that they wouldn't mind if BMW added some more ponies to it. I was wondering if it would matter at all, when I test drove the 4.8 it didn't feel as quick as my current 2001 4.4.

My X5 has 282 hps compared to the new 4.8 with 350 hps. Granted the new X5 is heavier but how much do you think is needed to make it as quick as the old X5?

Any thoughts?

I had a near new 4.4i for the day while my 4.8i had a software upgrade, it felt like I was towing a trailer. The 4.8i definately feels "quicker", ie. accelerates faster with less engine effort. It also handles better than the 4.4i, i'm more than happy with my 4.8i.

I thought that too---until I put the shifter in the sport position. The ratios for the shifting must change pretty dramatically. I felt like I was pinned to my seat when I accelerated.

It seems like an exageration, but my passenger's jaw just about dropped to the floor.

By the way, I'm pretty certain that the X5 isn't going to beat a 996 Turbo. ;-)

My 3.0si dosen't feel faster than my 2003 3.0i. But it is. That's because:
Engines are much more refined, quiet
and
Cabin is much quieter.

so you probably are accelerating faster, but don't notice it.

Maybe it has to do with the quieter engine. Or the power delivery (torque/hp band characteristics). You could do an unscientific experiment and time the 0-60mph acceleration for comparison purposes. Sport mode may make for crisper shifts so that may conitrubute to the "seat of the pants" feeling.

I had an 04 4.4 and in normal mode it seemed faster than my 4.8 E70. That changes in sport mode. The sport mode seems to be one gear lower at all times. In fact I can't get it to shift to 6th without going manual.
