4.8 tranny issues fixed?

I am a prospective customer for a E70 4.8 but I read quite a lot of bad reports on people having issues with the transmission behaviour. I want to know whether this has been cured by some sort of software update. Please post info related to this problem.

p.s. I remember 550 and 535d drivers reporting similar issues in another forum. Dont think they were addressed at all.

There were quite a few problems mostly with early production X5's. There have been numerous updates since then that have pretty much dealt with the problem. I have an April build 4.8 and the only issue is that it holds gears on hills which I don't mind.

Mine seems to downshift pretty hard when I let off the gas, almost as if you hit the brakes abruptly. Noticed this on a vehicle I test drove also and the salesman at the time said it was related to the sport mode (shifter in the sport position "DS"), but seems to be the case in regular Drive ("D") also. I think this happens only at low speeds, but have only had the car since Sunday and barely driven it since Tuesday morning. And my build was early this month.

Also seems to stay in first gear when moving through parking garage/parking lots, stays in first gear a little over 3000 rpms, making it extra sensitive/jerky and a little annoying.

I am surprised to here that even recent builds have the same probem. It is boring of BMW not to address this. After all this very same autobox in both the three and five series has been praised by many mags as the best auto in the world. Maybe it finds it hard to cope with the weight and the torque of the 4.8 E70.

p.s. art did you notice any improvements after the update

The update does not improve anything on the transmission. The dealer claims they are stumped and have other 4.8is with same complaint.

i finally had the time to drive my car today after the tranny soft update. let me tell you, it is like a different car, especially in regular D mode. the shifts are much more intuitive and smooth. also, the issues with not shifting properly after incline have been resolved. overall, i am glad i got it!
