Effects of gas prices on diesel's release in US
Do you think the the recent spike in gas prices will push up BMW's release date of the diesel here in the US? Thanks |

Doubt it, if anything it would help the release. Diesels routinely get better gas mileage so why would their release be hurt by gas prices?
As for BMR question, IMO BMW hasn't seen a real market for diesels in the states to justify the added cost in making diesels EPA compliant. How many diesels do you see on the road compared to gasoline powered rides? BUT that said, with increasing fuel concerns and overall better technology and finally meeting shit_y US EPA standards it looks like BMW can finally hit this coastline. why is this in the E70 forum?

Diesels will be a big hit in California as they were years ago before the pollution police put the clamps on em. When they finally become compliant folks out here will but em like crazy. regarding
why is this in the E70 forum? who knows???Quote:

BigR,
I think the OP meant would 4 buck a gallon gas induce BMW to hasten the coming of diesel motors...I suspect they are on their own time schedule, but who knows. I'd be enthused about a diesel X3 or... BR,mD

I believe the X5 is the first model to have the diesel: the X5 3.0d is coming out this fall I think.

Interestingly enough Australia got the diesel (released April '07) before the Petrol 6 cylinder (released in June '07) !!! BMW claim around 70% of sales in Australia are the diesel version..!

Australia has had the diesel X5's since the very first model release, I have the second generation E53 diesel sports, it has done 75,000klm, bought it new in Jan 2004. My new X5 E70 diesel arrives on the 10th June 2007.
I use 9.4 ltr per 100klm city driving (that around 1000klms per tank), counrty driving I get close to 1250klm from a tank, I drive pretty hard (just put new brakes, rotors & 19" tires on the X5 at 66,000klm), the diesel produces around 500nm. I have saved over $3,000 per year in fuel costs compared to a V8 X5 and have services less often with a diesel as well. The re-sale value of the diesel X5 is much higher than the V8 X5. I currently get diesel fuel $0.06 cheaper than unleaded petrol. I also believe the diesel X5 sports handles better than the V8 because there is less weight over the frontend. The new E70 diesel motor now is even 25kg lighter again (55lbs), 8% more fuel effiecent and with 7% more torque (520nm) The V8 maybe quicker off the mark but if you look at the diesel time from say 30kph to 90klm its just about the same as the V8. So on the highway passing cars there is no difference between the two. If you are thinking of buying a X5 E70 and the diesel is coming to the USA wait. Otherwise still wait because you will be able to buy the V8's cheaper secondhand once the diesel is released. |
