The blackbox keeps a record of certain things for a the past few minutes.
The police can use it in an accident case. They can get what your speed was and if you were hitting the brakes.
You can grant them permission to use it or they can remove it and hold it while they obtain a search warrant.
I think all motor vehicles capture information now in some way. Even BMW does it and to a higher degree. One poster advised that BMW knew when the check engine light came on and how long the car was driven after the warning was displayed. They denied replacing the engine under warranty because of it.
