3M clear tape protection

Hello,

Need your help, can't decide if this is worth spending $400 on.

After almost 3 months of waiting, I went to pick up my new X5 today and decided at the last minute to have the dealer install the 3M clear tape hood protection. Saw a demo with one on, didn't look too bad, however IMO it looks better w/o it. What do all X5 owners out there think? Is it really necessary and worth the investment?

It's being put on tomorrow afternoon, but I have time to call it off by tomorrow morning if I need to? Really appreciated it if anyone can reply ASAP.

Thanks!

I have it had it on twice on my e53 (I got hit in the front and had to have it replaced). I have black so it's definitely worth it. Even if I didn't have black I would get it because it protects your paint in front. Just make sure they are a good installer and using the latest film--the film in the last few years is even thinner yet more stronger than previous versions.

Thanks for the quick reply BGM.

I think I will go ahead and let them install it.
It's being done by a 3rd party thru the BMW dealership using 3M tape is all I know. I'm sure if I ask, they will say that it's the latest and greatest regardless.

Thanks again for your input, really appreciate it.

Definitely worth it. You don't have to go thru dealer unless its a good price. You can find installers here

I had my dealer do it for $300 and it is worth it. Sure at the right angle you can see it but you can also see the chips without it from more angles.
It is also removeable or replaceable. There are also a couple of different coverage kits.

The hood protection only extends part way up the hood right ? After a few years of washing etc.. wouldn't the area protected look slightly different from the unprotected area when the film is removed and be visible to the naked eye ?

Not that I have seen but my car is new. It will look different when the front of the hood is peppered with rock chips if you do not.

It does only go 18" or so up the hood plus parts of the front bumper and I also got it for the backs of the side mirrors. You can always add it later but the key is a clean surface to start with so opted for when new.
