Hy Tim,
do you have the Proffesional Navigation System with the Bluetooth Option ? Normally if you have ordered this, you have the Software and Hardware (the cars own SIM Card) for BMW Assist and BMW Online in your car. But you still canīt use it as you have to get a contract with for this services. When you have done that, the system can be initialized and there you go. If you donīt have the Navi Prof. with BT you may write the BMW Online off. Regards Christian |

Christian,
yes, I have Prof Nav System and Bluetooth Option. I have almost every option available apart from BMW Online. So, if I understand correctly I just need to get my Online registered and then I will get options in the iDrive menu which are not seen at the moment, and I will be able to use the Online services ? Can I ask you how you know this ? It is strange that I have asked many people from BMW and they don't know, but you do ??? Did you have same problem on your car ? Thanks, Tim |

Hy again Tim,
normally you should find already some menu parts of BMW Assist or Online. I had a problem with the hardware and I couldnīt use both services regarding to the error. In Germany, all X5 with Navi Prof. with BT have the Assist and Online components automatically. As I checked on the UK BMW site know, in UK you have to order it seperatly, so the guys from BMW might be right. But itīs only software I suppose, the second SIM card phone should be in as you have BMW Assist, donīt you. Check your iDrive setup menu (when you push the knob down) under settings for a menu point "BMW service settings" or something named similar . Sorry may car "speaks" german and so I donīt know the exact name of it. There you will find 2 menu points, status and profile. Under status you will find the function "Initialize" BMW telematic services (only available when you have the contract for these options. Nevertheless, there should be 2 menu points in your communication part of the iDrive menu with BMW Assist and BMW Online. There should be written that you have to activate your account under the setup menu and so on. So you only find BMW Assist and no BMW Online menu point ? Maybe they can flash the software of your car and put the right one in. They should write a PUMA message to the technical guys in Germany, they will sort it out. Good Luck on this topic and donīt be too sad if itīs not working, itīs a nice to show thing but close to useless in everydayīs life to my opinion. ever tried to write an email with the iDrive ? Regards Christian |

Christian,
I just checked and this is what I see : I have BMW Assist and this is working. In "BMW service settings" I have two options, one is "Service status" and the other is "profile" (as you suggested). Under the "Service status" menu I see 4 entries, "Options", "SOS Call", "Info Services" and "BMW Mobile Services". The only entry which is selectable is "Options", and a pop-up menu appears giving me the option to "Update". When I select this after a few minutes I am taking back to the same menu and nothing changes. There is no "Initialize" so I assume that "Update" is same ? The "profile" menu mentioned above just lists my car details, e.g. my car colour, registration number, and telematics id. So, in your post you mentioned 2 menu points - I am not sure what you meant by this. Does the above description of what I see make sense, and can we conclude anything from it ? If I enter the Communication Menu I have option for BMW Assist, but nothing for BMW Online is shown. BTW. I want this service so that I can configure address book and navigation destinations etc. from my pc, and not just for email. I agree that sending lots of emails using iDrive is not practical, but reading them might be if anything urgent to read from friends/family who need me to read something whilst I am driving car. I beleive my dealer has already sent a PUMA msg so maybe they will advise on next action. I appreciate your help very much so far, as you give me some hope ![]() Thanks, Tim |

Yes, in UK the BMW Assist is free for first 6 months, and then it costs Ģ120 per year (eg. Ģ10 / $20 per month). Did you order BMW Online ? |

Hey Tim,
sounds like you are really missing the BMW Online in your X5. Everything is as it should be in the setup menu, the update function is working too. So I think they will have to go deeper into the software stuff of the X5 and put all programms on it and maybe reprogramm some hardware modules. They normally hesitate from doing this because of never touch a running system, but if you put a little pressure on your dealer by meantioning you will return the car because of his fault might help. Crossing fingers that they get it working. So long Christian |

Christian,
Thankyou again. I am much happier now we have had this chat, because from your information it seems that I have all the necessary hardware in place and just need new firmware/software. This makes the addition of Online out of factory easier. I am now waitng for PUMA response from dealer, and will let you know what happens - in case somebody else reading this forum has same problem. Thanks, Tim |

Christian,
I have just take an telephone call from my dealer. They got a response to the PUMA and are now ordering parts which they will install for me to give my car BMW Online support. So, it looks like I will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of Online soon. Thanks again for your help, Tim |
