For me it's a must! It gives the car a more sporty look. But this is purely subjective. With young kids, this is on top helpful. I agree that with rain- mud, risk of dirtying pants is high...

Don't really think they make that much difference...personal preference. I haven't ordered them for practicality (don't want dirty trousers) . As for adding to the sportiness I think they are peripheral compared to the wheels. The 20" wheels are a must have if you want to make the car look sporty....plus they just look soooo much better.

I didn't like they way they looked on White, so I didn't order them.

I do think they look good on certain colors.

i think that its a must... from my point of view it gives it more of a sporty look and without it, it just seems like its missing something.
i've been an owner of two x5s and i don't find it difficult to get in and out (im 5'10 so im not even tall)
but i do find the running boards very useful when im hooking up skis on the roof... it gives me something to step up on

I had no idea this was such a hot topic, I guess cause I bought mine off the showroom floor and didn't get to pick options....

Here's a pic of my Black X5 without running boards. I agree with other posters; I really like the look of the running boards but on lighter colors for some reason. I debated long and hard about getting them, but then decided against especially with black exterior and fact that getting in and out was more of a struggle IMHO.
