Inauspicious Start Redux

Hate to scare possible new X5 buyers out there but per my prior post "Inauspicious Start" I said the dealer had corrected the "software" problem. Well less than 2 days later my X5 crashed again - same Brake and DSC Malfuntion Warning, which was augmented by 4 Wheel Drive Malfunction Warning as well. Also left turn signal won't turn off by itself, you have to manually turn it off.

When I returned to dealer they Service guys were really puzzled - not a good sign. So out of 3 1/2 days of ownership the Dealer has had my '08 X5 for 2 of them and has put on more miles than I.

I informed them under my state's lemon law this is now strike 2 for same problem, 1 more time and I get a new car. Sad to see the BMW quality has really gone down, my 740iL never had one malfuntion.

Well quality on your particular vehicle and VIN went down. Your the first poster with this problem on a web board dedicated to helping X's with issues.....

BMW is batting pretty well.

Yes, I mentiioned to the dealer that I had not seen this problem mentioned in posts from '07 owners and wondered if this is an '08 model related problem. They have brought in BMW USA to address probem as my X5 was the first '08 4.8 that this dealer delivered.

Hum..I was trying to see if a new option affected or caused your issue...doesn't seem like it. You would think its carry over software so maybe now it coudl be a defective ECU/PCM Engine Control Unit or Powertain Unit - maybe something intermittent which is setting the faults your seeing.

I think he's also the first poster with an 08. Wouldn't doubt if it's a software problem. These drivetrain/powertrain s/w issues have really seemed to become a consistent problem since E53 facelift 4.4i.

Hope they figure it out DMac.

I think it may have to do with the Auto Hold function. I know you mentioned in your previous thread that Auto Hold was not engaged, but it could still be malfunctioning and causing the problem, even if you have not activated it. Auto Hold is a new feature for the 2008's.

It could also have something to do with the steering angle sensor (since you also have a problem with the turn signal not resetting). There were a batch of steering angle sensors that were bad a couple of years ago on the E60, E63 and since these new turn signals don't have any mechanical engaging and disengaging they must rely on the steering angle sensor to turn off.

Let us know what the outcome is.

I think the key is that it works fine for a while and then went haywire. To me - sounds more like a module issue than software. DMac has found these issues within less than 3 days of driving. If there was a major issue with them, BMW would be telling dealers to put them on hold and not ship any to customers until they realize what the fix / issue is. This (to me) seems like an isolated case where maybe the production guy didn't plug somethign in right or dropped a unit prior to installing it - could have been a Monday built vehicle...LOL.

or a Friday afternoon vehicle... (always in a rush to start the weekend early!)

Statistics say the most productive work days are during the middle of the week...

so for now on, let's request that all vehicles be built on Wednesdays and thursdays...

i'm calling my dealer today!!
