Originally, I went to Cars.com website and built my car there with options and packages. After getting total invoice and msrp, sent this inquiry to dealers close to my place. Internet manager then started sending me email on prices. I picked the lowest and best deal offered to me which is $900 over invoice plus floormats.

Good to hear this method works. I'm not so sure I could hit 3 dealers in person and try and get them to bid against each other. $900 over invoice is sweet.

As a general rule for car buying, ALWAYS start low and go up. With BMWs, it usually starts at $500 above invoice and goes up from there.

$900 above invoice is a really good deal. I think my friend didnt really get the best deal possible (probably didn't bargain with my sales rep hard enough). I'll tell him that later though; saying that to him now would be raining on his (parents') parade.

We are still in the process of buying an 08. Except for a trailer hitch priced at $1,250 (pretty high- parts are about $550 retail- the labor from BMW is three hours- although every mechanic will tell you it takes longer.) we have a quote for a little less than $2,000 over invoice.

We are waiting for one other quote due today. Like LE22 we sent our request for quote via e-mail.

All three responded but one was clueless (BMW of Sterling)- said they had the exact car in stock for $54,100 (???). The cost is 66,700. We tried to follow up but they haven't responded.

What dealer is giving you the "slightly less than $2k over invoice" quote?

Until the deal is done I'd rather not say- but I will say only Passport and VOB are in the running at present. And it's more like $2,700 to $3K at this point- when the actual sales order was sent this AM we find we're arguing over a dealer "processing fee", raised destination charge etc. and I also think about $500 of the hitch is pure profit.

Buying a new car is such a PITA.

I spoke to one dealer outside of the NY/CT area. That was Passport in MD. This was before all prices were available but I figured out they were offering me about $2,500 off of MSRP --- which I decided was not worth the trouble. $2,500 off of MSRP is probably about $3,500 above invoice for the model I was looking for.

We bought the last X5 (a 2001) from Passport at $2,500 over. All in all it was pretty pleasant- they delivered the car on a flatbed we finalized in the dining room. This time around it's harder. If these two don't work out we'll contact some others...maybe even Circle in NJ who I've had pleasant experiences buying parts from. I just want to get it done at a fair price ($2,500 over would be fine with me and- I would hope- is fair to them) and quit screwing around. After all they're just taking the order and delivering the car.

It's funny you go on cars.com and if you get the 4.8, sport package and add the 20s it won't let you add the Comfort Seats--it says you can't have the 2 together.
