reprogramming required when upgrading to 20s???

on a quick conversation with my dealer today the subject came up on upgrading to 20s..... he stated i would need to bring the vehicle in for reprogramming (recalibration) so the X would be able to manage the new wheel/tire sizes in certain driving & braking situations...

it's not really about adjusting the suspension but more on the vehicle's software management system..

he also emphasized the importance of having them install, mount, and balance the new wheel/tire package... (along with the TPM sensors)

any comments?? is this required?? don't have cost estimates but it doesn't sound like they do it for cheap!!

I think your dealer is trying to pull one over on you. I changed my 20's recently to my 19's for winter all that has to be done is to reset the TPM through Idrive. All the wheel sizes have the same circumference the only difference I can see is rolling resistance with larger tires/wheels. However, the brakes rotors on the 4.8i are larger than the 3.0i. Call another dealer and ask them.

I think it may tie in with what you see in the invoice when ordering 20's: it'll say "Increased Top Speed Limiter" ... I think this allows it to go a little more to the top end (if your in GErmany on the Autobahn I guess)!

dealer must have meant TPM sensors.... funny how they try to act technical and stuff...

i'm sure that's what he meant...

thanks for the replies. I was planning on getting the 214 20s later (replica or OEM, whichever I find first and at a descent price) and wanted to make sure there weren't any issues with swapping them out myself.

i guess as long as i have them installed and balanced, and with the TPM sensors, i'll be fine..

I've never heard that....ever. Never did any 'adjustment' to my X when I switched between 20's and 18's yearly.....

I was under the impression you couldn't put on wheels any wider than the original ones you had... I guess this isn't true? Does anybody know what are the maximum height and widths you could put on? I'm just curious, not looking to put 26" wheels on...

Total overall circumference is the key. As long as the wheels do not exceed the same overall height and circumference you should be O.K. as for width you have to make sure that you will have turning radius clearance and no tire rubs on the fender and offset is correct. The larger the rim the smaller the tire sidewall.
